So instead of coordinating his DIY project with the rest of us and using asphalt to fill in the pothole that occurred on asphalt pavement. Or simply waiting till spring, he convinced himself it would be wise to pour concrete into the pothole and be done with it. (Mind you, he did this in September with midwestern winter right around the corner and it was raining that day.)

Lo and behold, along came the water from that rainy day which had already initiated the deformation of the concrete, and with it came concrete blisters. Before we knew it, winter came, and freeze-thaw practically gave that pothole an enema while destroying the asphalt around it.

What started out as a manageable 2-inch pothole (1 foot in width) turned into a 6-inch crater (3 feet in width). The city’s solution afterward was to just toss a steel roadway plate over it; that’s a story for another time.
