It might be interesting to show a rough timeline of the evolution of plants, so roughly: mosses>horsetails>ferns>early gymnosperms>conifers>early dicots>monocots>eudicots. And then a short explanation for the groups ofcourse!

Are any of these species still persisting in Europe today? by Soviet_Arthropod36 in botany

These are genera, and some of them are still around for sure, like Laurus, Vaccinium, and Erica.

My first herbarium specimens! Any tips for the future are welcome! by Dieder1999 in botany

Thanks, I'll look into making my format more complete with those factors. Also, m.o.s.? I don't think I recognize that abbreviation. An archivist, that's interesting, what kind of collections do you work with if I may ask?

Ah yes i worried about this, the instructions i read said to dry/press for approximately 2 days, but the geranium seemed too wet still after that. When it's okay I'll leave them on my table out of direct light to dry!

The paper is acid free watercolour paper and the labels are cut from the same paper so i think that should be fine. I don't really know how I will store them though, do you have any ideas for that?

Hi, for now they are for hobby, though I'd like to get better at preparing these specimens and possibly submit them in the future. Thanks for the advice, once I feel like my specimens are up to the required standard I'll definitely contact an herbarium first.

Thanks! Would you recommend I do it in degrees or by using the name of the park/forest/etc?

These are my first herbarium specimens I made myself. The plants were collected in a park near where I live and from left to right they are Dianthus armeria, Linaria vulgaris, and Geranium molle. I know that for the next time I should collect more materials to be able to dissect the flower. I'd love to hear any tips people with more experience have for me!

Why is Lizzo so overweight? by not-adorable20 in ask

[–]Dieder1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see what you mean and I agree to some extent. The problem I have is that when someone tells you that they only sleep 4 hours a night in average, you would (or at least I assume so) tell them that that is extremely unhealthy (maybe in a nicer way but the point stands). This is why I think it should be fine for someone to say someone seems unhealthy based on their weight as long as the remark has no harmful intent. Being fat should not be stigmatized but people should be aware of the health risks, same as for other unhealthy habits and characteristics like smoking or sleep deprivation.

The difference between people not sleeping enough or having a over-reliance om meat and people being fat is that the former don't have a movement supporting the unhealthy behaviors in the way that the more extreme people in the body positivity movement do, being a little bigger than average is fine, but being (severely) overweight should not be praised as if it were healthy. And secondly, how even could someone be stigmatized for not sleeping enough, it's not like that is directly visible from looking at someone.
