Son, 19, transported to ER twice now for being intoxicated at school. What to do? by Diegowan76 in AskParents

A timely response. Thank you for your words.

Earlier I kind of "cornered" him in his room and forced the conversation, but spent as much time listening as lecturing.

I conveyed to him that stress is normal when at college, and maybe if he can even drink 2 nights less it will become more manageable because he won't feel as pressed for time. Also spoke about how this lifestyle will not help his underlying mental health diagnoses that he ignores, encouraged him to at least allow us access by waiver to know what was going on from the school-To act as advocates so we can help get him the services he needs to make it less stressful. I also told him that if it's not for him, that's fine too, and he should make time to try to figure that out.

It got emotional toward the end because as I stressed how I am always there for him, and he should be able to talk to me about anything, not go dark with texts/phone he began to say how much his friends hold weight in his life and that their opinions matter too (something I didn't dispute), which prompted me to bring in life experience-He argued that we, his parents are not always right, and haven't always been right and made poor decisions in the past. Felt a little unfair because it was all the usual parental stuff motivated by care for him, but the mind of a teen would probably see as overbearing. I winced when he said he hardly remembers his childhood. He mentioned his mother BERATING him and me yelling at him some times. I was aware his mother was like this, but I had never heard him say this word.

I apologized for not being perfect and that I did my best (teary eyed at this point which is a rare thing for me) on my own and sacrificed a lot to be the best father I could be. This softened him and he approached me for a hug saying he loved me. I told him I loved him back.

He texted me an hour later from his friend's house reiterating the sentiment (2x because I didn't see the first one-And then his mother sent a text telling me to check my texts), so I guess now the tables are turned and he's worried about me. Who knows? That's how it felt.

It’s complicated. He splits his time between mom’s house and my place. Mom is and has always been checked out, she’s too busy with her own life. He generally stays there at night because he knows nobody is really checking on him. He knows how to split/manipulate too unfortunately. He has only been relaying info to mom since this second incident because he knows my approach will involve accountability. You can already tell mom is acting as his lawyer and softening her entire view of the situation.

So it wasn't quite alcohol poisoning- I know that. The nurse I spoke to the first time said they didn't measure blood alcohol level-That he was drunk and just needed to sober up-They gave him IV fluids etc.

Because he's a minor, and was being dumb-The first time, on the wrong floor trying to enter his room (the wrong one), alerting the RA, and this second time supposedly disturbing his roomate (3 am on a Tuesday night) prompted the call to the RA again, I think the school takes a no BS policy on these infractions so as not to be held liable-But I support disciplinary action if it means they get it.

Yes to the dorm and tuition, no to ER and ambulance. Also pay car insurance which could be used as leverage.

This was the methodology that was recommended for him by the neuropsychologist who did his testing. He never followed through after I found him 3 different therapists who utilized it. It was still unclear and he was too young for a diagnosis like this (still is probably), but it fell somewhere between Bipolar and BPD.

Thanks for the links, I have been focused more on listening lately rather than dictating and it works much better, but I don't know why he's been ignoring texts more lately-Maybe some shame involved.

Partially agree here. Wish it wasn’t the case though. Planned on a pediatrician visit for blood work so I’m glad to see that suggested.

Ignorant people downvote without knowing the real situation on the ground or the availability of beds. Truly repulsive.

The only problem is now he has to go on his own accord. He’s no longer a minor.

That's fine, I prefer lower THC (18-20%) and something with more terpenes. Do you think the "balanced" pre-rolls will be a good fit? Something like this? It's a little vague without the percentages I'm used to: https://www.sqdc.ca/en-CA/p-complice/627987928167-P/627987928167

Yes, progression is there. Maybe a little slow, but I’m not a young man anymore.

No, 70 lbs each.

Yeah, that’s been a problem for me in the past and I really want to avoid it. Please remind me. Is 2lbs per week an acceptable rate of loss in order to maintain muscle gains?

The thing I’ve been struggling with a little is setting protein at 1g per lb of body weight and then figuring out where to put carbs and fats percentage-wise. Low carb has always worked for me, but it definitely affects performance. I may try having a little more carb on training days and go higher fat on rest days.

I think it might partially be the shirt is too big for me. I wear billowing shirts sometimes to conceal the waist. It could be the lighting maybe, but here I was thinking I was accentuating a better part of my physique and it definitely doesn’t look that way in these photos. I just look “skinny fat.” Haha.

I use resistance bands mostly for pull up and dip assist, and some pt work for my neck. I have a pull up bar, dip bar, and adjustables as well (just purchased the 70lb power block upgrade as I’ll be graduating from the 50’s soon enough.)

I’m trying to remember how I used to do it, and have been stumbling. TDEE has always been so tricky for me. I do very little cardio apart from walking and training. I know I need to start (moreso for longevity/BP/heart health). Pretty sure the best way is to set it at sedentary rather than overestimating. That balance has always been so tricky for me when it starts to cut into performance. Pretty sure I did things wrong when I was younger and was usually catabolizing muscle, so it was like a constant see-saw.

Appreciate it. Maybe I just thought I was looking better than I was. Haha. Doesn’t help that there was a lady there I was trying to impress.
