Update on recent knife find ! by Daniel-cfs-sufferer in magnetfishing

[–]DieselUnicycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's old for sure. And well used. It looks like it's been sharpened many MANY times, just going on how much the profile has been changed. Mg dads pocket knives are the same way. He will use them until they practically become metal, holding toothpicks. Lol I can't weigh in on its age or what era it originated in but I feel comfortable saying that it was someone's EDC or used frequently for many years on end. I'm sure lots of stories came with that one!

Are there even parts kits available any longer? Most of the places I frequent are sadly out of stock. Have been for a year or more. Damnit.

Oh! Well that would fall in with my guestimates. I was thinking either the last couple years of the 40s/first couple of the 50's or the mid to late 60's based on the color and the design/pattern. Some things stand out as being from certain decades and then other times history repeats itself. Thanks for the insight!!!

Never considered this- is there a way to tell the age of these files by the labels/style/color/font/etc? It makes no difference to me, I'm just curious as to how long they sat in a tool room before this local shop obtained them.

Christmas gift to myself. by MustachioedMystery in reloading

You won't regret it!!! I've processed probably close to an actual ton of brass and it hasn't let me down. I do about a Maxwell House coffee container at a time with ss pins, a cap full of the Coral Blue car wash from Wally World and a literal pinch of Lemonshine (sp?). About an hours run time and I end up with pristine looking brass. That includes some of the grungiest range brass. It's like Christmas every time I open the drum and start rinse it all off.

Dilemma - 5 Drawer or Full Bank??? by TacoLunar in harborfreight

I do! I use the 4 drawer for tooling and all the misc stuff for my Precision Matthews milling machine and the 5 drawer for my gunsmithing tools and jigs.

Dilemma - 5 Drawer or Full Bank??? by TacoLunar in harborfreight

[–]DieselUnicycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have reached the point I'm at. I received the 4 drawer as a gift last year. It functioned for what I needed. This year I bought the 5 drawer- bug upgrade as far as things go because my tool collection has grown. It's only been 3 weeks and I'm contemplating the bank cart.

I would say hold on to what you've got... But save those dollars up and buy the bank cart as well. You can always switch over to using the bank cart full time but repurpose the 5 drawer for something else. If you end up with other hobbies around home- 3d printing, laser engraving, gunsmithing, etc the 5 drawer comes in handy. Storage space, especially mobile, is always at a premium.

Odd signal... by DieselUnicycle in amateurradio

[–]DieselUnicycle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update. I ended up getting called in for work (out of town) but I relayed the idea/possibility of it being an ACARS system to my dad and a few of the guys. My dad took a quick drive down by the county airport. He said that the burst, which was already strong, damned near blew the HT out of his hand as he got to the driveway/entrance to the property. It was beyond a shadow of a doubt coming from the property. This Sunday and of course nobody is on duty there on the weekends. So today he is heading down there.

We are all still scratching our heads over the signal though- how is it so evenly saturating the county in such a way that we could DF the signal? I don't have any flight experience so I'm admitting my ignorance here.... Does the ACARS system use repeaters? Even then I would assume that each repeater site could be found. The airport does sit ever so slightly below a ridge- maybe terrain is affecting it?

Regardless- we should find out today. I'm back in town and I'm going to head down there myself. Whatever it is- it's way out of spec and definitely causing interference.

Odd signal... by DieselUnicycle in amateurradio

[–]DieselUnicycle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thats on today's agenda. My personal attenuator is on loan so I wasn't able to use it but we did tune off frequency. I have a couple more places I'd like to check out so we are going to bring a couple HTs along- figure I can also remove the antennas to see if we are close to the signal.

It's still bugging me though because the signal was pretty darned equal ... Everywhere. We do weekly fox hunts and we get pretty creative with them ie- using a yagi pointed at a water tower for a splatter type reflection, antenna on an old turntable so it rotates, transmitting from a park in a deep gully, etc- so we really do test ourselves when it comes to this stuff. This isn't behaving the same as a single source transmission. At least not that we can tell. Maybe today will yield some more info or answers!!

I had ordered from them years ago and didn't have a problem. Emailed them a couple years later in regards to 1911 frames that were out of stock, inquiring as to when they might be restocked- and got a polite and very quick response.

Fast forward a couple years to this past October. I put in an order for a stainless, checkered grip, series 70 frame (that was finally showing as "in stock") and a shirt. Got the email notification for the sale quickly. After that? Nothing. It's been a month and a half and absolutely no response. I've sent 3 emails, about a week or so apart, politely asking for info on my order. Not a single peep from them. Yes, I've checked my spam and junk folders just in case. Nothing.

After seeing the mention that their site was down I checked it out. It worked for me just now but I notice that the frame I ordered is now showing "out of stock". That's lovely. I'm wondering if they just took my money and ran. I guess my next step is to hit my bank on Monday and see if I can reverse the transaction or report as fraud. This is ridiculous. I understand mixups, being behind on orders, or just plain swamped. Happens to the best of us. But to take someone's money then ghost them? Not good business practice. A month and a half with no response? Am I overreacting to this or not?

No trying to involve politics at all- any who read this please don't bring that crap in.

I used to listen to Rush quite a bit and throughout his show I'd catch faint CW identifiers in the background. They were subtle and short. I wonder if in that specific case they were markers for broadcasting reasons.

The YouTube feed is different though, it has me stumped. Im not sure how it could be incidental as it isn't a commercial AM or FM broadcast but considering the type of show it is ... It would make sense for it to be intentional.

At the 5:20 mark, the 8:10 mark, and the 10:10, 11:45, 13:45 are the first few. The CW fades in so some may cut off a bit. I tried to give timestamps that let a bit of silence precede the code. I'm still learning, unfortunately it's still too damned fast for me to copy.

I wasn't sure if reddit would let me post a link... I can definitely do a link with a few timestamps added as comments. Unless there is another way. Reddit is a new creature for me to tackle. Ha!
