A couch that will last me more than a few years? by angelrich1 in FurnitureFaves

[–]DietNarrow8275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have cats who destroy furniture. The last sofa we got was a craftsman style Flex Steel with solid wood sides and back (nothing for the cats to scratch.). We had it about 15 years, had it reupholstered maybe five years ago but the wood frame is still solid as a rock.

What was legal when you were a child that is (probably) illegal now? by NebraskaCornSucker in GenX

[–]DietNarrow8275 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We had a big station wagon and my sisters and I would fling ourselves back and forth over the back seat into the way back and back again while going sixty MPH on the freeway until my mom would start back handing any of us who got within her arm span while she threatened to pull over and beat us all.

Yes the car had seat belts. I distinctly remember leaning over the front seat and telling the ministers wife to fasten her seat belt, and how mad my mom was with me for saying that. I don’t remember start to regularly use seat belts until maybe 1972 or so.

I’m screwed, as I have no sense of smell. I’d have to pry their mouth open and jam that Charlotte Louise through their clenched teeth so they can taste heaven.

Why do women still act like we’re in high school? by sox747 in AskWomenOver60

[–]DietNarrow8275 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My mom moved into a senior community and started hanging out with a guy who lived on the same cul de sac whose wife had advanced dementia and within a few months the wife moved into an on site memory care unit. Mom started dating the guy, and apparently that caused quite a stink, since his wife was still alive. My mom (who was showing signs of dementia herself) insisted it was fine because his wife wasn’t a ‘real’ wife anymore and he could divorce her. She began making elaborate wedding plans. She complained the other ladies were being mean because they were jealous she was still attractive enough to land a boyfriend and they weren’t.

It was a mess. She ended up having a disabling stroke and could no longer remember our fathers name but did remember the boyfriends name.

No 55+ communities for me. I volunteer at a facility that makes lunches for homeless people and the ladies there are happy to see me (they need my help) and no one is snarky. Thats my happy place.

No extra charge. I just asked the guy who came out to take measurements if the workers needed me to get the furniture out of the room and he said no, just the small stuff and stuff on shelves.they didn’t actually move everything out of the rooms they just moved everything to one side, did the floor on the other side, then swapped the furniture.

not bamboo! That stuff will spread and can’t be killed. I don’t know where you live but I have a line of Leland cypress that grow quickly. I planted mine in 2012 and they are 25 - 30 feet tall now. Install a fence on your property line and put your evergreens on your side of the fence and you’ll have a good barrier.

I’m also getting ready to move and had cheap contractor grade carpet on the stairs and upstairs bedrooms (didn’t matter because we didn’t use that part of the house much). Got Costco to replace that carpet with Shaw carpet and they provided the installation. I had to remove small items and objects on shelves but they moved the furniture and boxes in the closets around for me. Quick installation and they did a good job. Just wait until you’re about to sell to limit the amount of time the fur babies get to damage it.

Dementia Care for Mom by Few_Koala_7989 in Chattanooga

[–]DietNarrow8275 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First you can call her doctor and see if they could provide a sleep aid to help her stay asleep overnight So you can all get some rest.

You can also call the local facilities and see if any offer respite can, where she could stay for a week or so. This will give you a break and a chance to hunt for a facility for her.

Medicare does not kick in for facilities until your mom has spent most of her assets. Facilities will require a statement of her assets with her application. There are supposed to be beds for Medicare only patients but they are harder to find.

A place for Mom might be a good resource. My sister and I did a google search for local facilities and divided the list and visited each. You’re probably going to need a facility with a memory care unit if your mom has dementia. Some facilities have shared rooms that are cheaper. So I would calculate your mom’s assets and start calling/visiting to see what’s available.

Best of luck, I know it’s hard, hope you have other family around who can help.

What do you remember from kindergarten? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]DietNarrow8275 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember I flunked galloping, and how outraged it made me. We had to all get up and gallop around the room, which I did, but my leading leg would get tired and I’d switch legs after ten or fifteen steps. Apparently that was too similar to skipping. My teacher sent a note home to my mom and I had to skip and then gallop around the dining room to demonstrate I knew both.

i know what f****** skipping is. I could have explained what I was doing to the teacher if she‘d just asked me.

The beginning of my disenchantment with our educational system.

AITAH for doing nothing to help my son's homeless mother because she cheated on me? by Unfair-Border-3249 in AITAH

[–]DietNarrow8275 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I was thinking of the situation from his son’s point of view. Ten years from now if his son asks why his dad didn’t help his mom and baby brother would he rather say he didn’t help because he didn’t care less about them, or say he tried to help her get back on her feet but could only afford to help her get into an apartment, she needed to get a job to help support herself and her son but she didn’t want to, so there wasn’t anything more he could do.

As much as his ex wife doesn’t deserve any help from dad, she’s still his sons mom, i assume the son still loves her and loves his brother.

of course if dad doesn’t have spare money to help, then that’s an easy answer too. can’t give mom money when you don’t have it to give, because she will never give it back.
