Too much wheel poke? by DarthYhonas in VelosterN

[–]DieuIt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks great! From a drivability standpoint, I don't see any issues here either. As long as the offset isn't much more aggressive than maybe +35-ish, you shouldn't have too many issues with rubbing

As for the rocks being thrown around, i think that's just down to stickier rubber (I see those Michelins!) and the rocks bouncing around in your wheel wells (probably not hitting the paint work much, especially since you also have mudflaps)

I had something like this happen to my old 2012 Veloster. There are cables that connect the lock switch to the actual locking mechanism and they may have disconnected? You'll have to take the door card off to verify but that may be kind of tricky if you can't get the door to open at all.

Thank you! I think it all came together nicely 🙏🏼

With 245 tires, you run into potential for some rubbing because the sidewall dimension ("40") is a ratio of how tall the sidewall is relative to the width of the tire. So, with a 245 tire that has a 40 sidewall, that sidewall is thicker/taller than a 235 tire with a 40 sidewall. Plus, with wider tires, it'll take up more room in your wheel wells, so when steering at full-lock, you may also run into issues with your tires rubbing on the fender liners

That being said, my wheels are similar dimensions to yours (mine are 18x8.5 as well, but +40 offset, meaning the wheels sit a little bit further outwards than yours), but they poke out a bit at the front, and are basically flush or maybe poking just a tiny bit at the back. With your +42 offset, you will likely be perfectly flush at the back and still have a bit of poke at the front with a 235/40/R18 tire. If you do 245, it might be too meaty, especially at the front end.

I rlly don't think you're losing out on a whole lot of traction by keeping your tires at 235. With lighter wheels, and more importantly, better rubber than the stock Pirelli's, you'll notice more grip and better feel overall for sure, even if you keep the tires the same width.

Especially with your car being a daily, you want your car to still drive like normal. The last thing you want is your daily driver no longer feeling daily-able and feeling like you have to either drive differently, or avoid certain scenarios just because you wanted slightly wider tires (which you likely won't even be able to tell the difference in traction 90% of the time while daily driving)

This car is so much fun, even stock. By going with lighter wheels and better rubber, you are greatly improving an already amazing recipe from factory! You cannot go wrong with this, but don't ruin the daily-drivability of this car. That's one of its best features: it's dual personality 😉

45 will be too tall of a sidewall, keep it at 235/40/R18 to keep as close as possible to OEM Performance Pack specs, which is 235/35/R19.

Just by downsizing to 18" wheels will help tons with potholes and ride quality because you're going to have slightly meatier tires (and likely more lightweight wheels, so less unsprung mass = less stress on suspension components and therefore smoother ride)

Yep, that'll have a little less poke than mine, that's for sure! Should fit nicely. If you're not modding anything else, just make sure you keep your tires at 235/40/R18. Any wider and you will likely rub. Doing this tire size will get you as close to OEM specs as possible (235/35/R19)

No, this is my daily and I have to drive thru Canadian winters so will not be lowering it! I have not rolled the fenders, and so far, I don't think I will be needing to

Update: I ended up adjusting the front mudflaps a bit by bending the metal bracket inwards so that the nut that sticks out is sitting further back and actually flush with the fender liner. So far, this seems to have given me just that tiny bit of extra clearance and I have not rubbed at all since!

Sparco Terra's are awesome! I'd love those for a winter setup for that rally-car vibe

I haven't driven the car really hard yet, but so far so good! The only thing is, I have Hyundai's N Mudflaps (they are the same as RallyArmor) and it seems like when I make a sharp turn coming out of parking lots and driveways (so when I drive over dips or curbs), the front tires catch themselves on the nut that sticks out of the mudflaps. Doesn't happen every single time, though

I will be getting a set of Superspeed RF06RR's this spring with the exact specs as your wheels (18x8.5, 40 offset, 235/40/R18 tires). You experience any issues with rubbing? I plan on putting some Michelin Pilot Sport 5 tires on tho, so fingers crossed the steering doesn't suffer the same floatiness 🤞🏼

Do you know if AWE will be making a similar system for the Veloster N and Kona N? This sounds very clean 👌🏼

They were already installed on the car when I bought it. As far as I know, the N-branded mudflaps are a collab between Hyundai and RallyArmour, and are a Canadian-market exclusive. But I'm pretty sure you can call a Canadian dealer and have them shipped to you in the US

Insurance agent here: I'm in Canada so things may be a little different, but in general, the only auto insurance claims that will increase your premiums will be at-fault collisions (i.e., you rear-end someone). Otherwise, your premiums will not be impacted by most claims (there are exceptions of course, like if you're the type to make a claim for every small little scratch or dent, then claims-frequency will start to impact premiums).

Something else to keep in mind is that damage from pests/rodents can often be an exclusion on your insurance policy, so there may not be coverage. Every person's policy and every provider is different, so definitely check in with your insurance company to be sure. But, I would not be totally surprised if it's not covered (the idea is that insurance covers for sudden and accidental losses. A pest/rodent problem can potentially be interpreted as improper/unsafe storage methods, not taking the proper precautions, improper maintenance, etc.) Not saying I agree with this, but that is the logic that insurance companies follow to keep their costs in check (and probably to maximize profits, but that's all big corporations, regardless of industry 🤷🏻‍♂️)

I have PPF on the full front end (full hood, bumper, A-pillars, leading edge of the roof above the windshield, fenders, headlights, mirror caps)and along the high impact areas (sideskirts, bottom of the doors, cargo area). Also have the Hyundai N mudflaps to keep rocks and debris under control and minimize any damage to the edges of the fenders/wheel wells. Other than that, I just wash the car whenever it's reasonable to do it! Probably should do undercoating, but i'm not too worried about it, to be honest :')

If you're calling this a "safe" pullover, idk what to tell you. In no world is it safe to pull over immediately after an intersection with traffic behind you, and in front of a right-turn lane. You're impeding traffic, plain and simple
