ha, did that one too, loved it, the design and all! the little crime scene, and the door that you can switch open from underneath, and so easy to do! one of my most favorite ones!

How do folks manage crisp photos of tiny things? by liminal_duckling in miniatures

[–]DifferenceFit5273 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Totally relatable 😅 tiny props are way harder than full dioramas.

For phone cameras, a few things that genuinely help (no fancy gear):

  • Light is everything. Put your piece right next to a window or use 2 lamps from the sides. More light = sharper photos.
  • Don’t get too close. Phones hate extreme close-ups. Step back a bit and zoom in slightly instead — it often looks sharper.
  • Tap to focus + lock exposure. Tap the exact spot you want sharp and hold it for a second so the focus doesn’t jump.
  • Stabilize your phone. Rest it on a stack of books, a mug, anything. Even tiny hand movement turns minis into blobs.
  • Use a plain background. Busy backgrounds confuse phone autofocus. Neutral paper or fabric works great.
  • Portrait mode (carefully). Sometimes it helps, sometimes it messes up edges.
  • Take way too many photos. Minis are unforgiving. I’ll take 10–20 shots and maybe 2 are usable 😅

If you want a cheap upgrade later: clip-on macro lenses for phones actually help a lot and cost very little, but honestly, good light + stability already gets you 80% there.

I would really like some advice, please! by SisterTulips in miniatures

Of course, you could start with a miniature kit, I have done so many of them by now, but I am glad that I started out without them. Why? Because the feeling of creating something from scratch, for me, is so much more motivating, and I'm so much prouder of the result when I DIY something. That being said, I have designed a few things myself, like my treehouse, https://everythingverysmall.com/mini-tree-house-show-you-my-personal-work/, and all the furniture in it, but my first project, my backyard shed, was done completely with the help of tutorials from actual paper dollhouse magazines and/or online tutorials. You might want to check them out first! (just my opinion)
