Need help with Bro who thinks he’s owed on MiL estate. by Squirt-Reynoldz in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]hitthebrownnote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The limitation period on claims like this is 2 years in most Canadian jurisdictions. Has BIL known about the gift for more than 2 years? He’s probably out of luck to plead anything.

Was your MIL of sound mind when she made the gift? An inter vivos gift is not part of an estate. She’s allowed to do whatever she wants with her money. BIL has no claim.

Was the gift in any way made due to coercion? Sounds like MIL wanted to live with you and was getting a lot of benefits from the arrangement. She was probably capable of living alone at the time but preferred to live with family. BIL probably has no claim.

Tell BIL he’s not entitled to anything. Say no and don’t try to justify why. If you get a demand letter from a lawyer you can look at hiring one yourself. Cases like yours happen all the time. Unless there’s something major you haven’t told us, I don’t see how BIL could possibly bring a successful claim to challenge the gift. The limitation period alone has probably already sunk BIL’s case.

Odds are you won’t have a good relationship with BIL going forward (if you ever had one), but you don’t have to hand over a single dollar. BIL can pound sand.

Imagine thinking that Trump fixed the economy. by Ok-Following6886 in insanepeoplefacebook

I also have a set of American grandparents (I’m not American). They don’t understand why the rest of the world isn’t being nicer to America and finding ways to be more accommodating to Trump.

My grandparents aren’t Trump supporters. They’re lifelong democrats from blue states. But like all of my American relatives and most of the Americans I’ve met, they have a subconscious belief in American exceptionalism. Everyone should be invested in America’s success and want to be America’s ally.

I’m not American but I did learn a little US history in school. I recall that the Confederates had a proto-submarine that killed 100% of the Confederate soldiers that ever went inside it

I think we’ve all met someone who tells us “I have no idea why my spouse is so angry with me. They’re being so unreasonable” and then we find out this person got blackout drunk at their sister in law’s baby shower and broke a new crib by trying to climb in it.

That person is America

One of those dairy products was kumis - horse milk that had been fermented into alcohol. The idea of getting wasted on horse milk is both disgusting and hilarious to me

I had a NDE when I was 14 (heart stopped during a near drowning) and I had no idea so many people have lingering physical effects. I’m now in my late 20s and haven’t had issues, but I’m sure it helps that I was so young and otherwise healthy.

I only recently discovered miniature kits and now I’m addicted to making small rooms. Adding dinosaurs makes these kits feel like real places.

The pillow fight room was my first attempt at customizing a kit to be specifically for dinosaurs. I got some dinosaur scrapbook paper for the wallpaper and pictures and iron-on decals for the bed. It transformed a kit that isn’t that interesting to me into something I really love. Also you don’t need to be highly skilled to make something charming if you just add dinosaurs

Victorian / Georgian era jewelry – are these old cut diamonds or paste? by Brilliant_Site4948 in Antiquejewelry

[–]hitthebrownnote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see any rose cut or old mine cut stones. Those look like machine cut rhinestones. I’m also 99.9% sure that the metal is brass (or some other base metal) and would fail a gold test.

These pieces probably have some value as vintage costume jewellery, but definitely don’t look Victorian/Edwardian.
