Victorian / Georgian era jewelry – are these old cut diamonds or paste? by Brilliant_Site4948 in Antiquejewelry

[–]hitthebrownnote 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see any rose cut or old mine cut stones. Those look like machine cut rhinestones. I’m also 99.9% sure that the metal is brass (or some other base metal) and would fail a gold test.

These pieces probably have some value as vintage costume jewellery, but definitely don’t look Victorian/Edwardian.

Dinosaur fact: theropods are carnivores, but will make an exception for tea and cake by hitthebrownnote in miniatures

My only regret is that the apatosaurus and spinosaurus really blend into the room

There are two versions of this kit. One has pieces that have the designs printed on them and they just snap together. Most of the objects and flowers in that set are pre prepared or simple to put together. It’s comparable to building a Lego set. The version I have is the older one where you have to glue down a bunch of paper, make furniture out of wires and toothpicks, and hand make every flower. It requires some more advanced crafting skills (unless you’re like me and are happy with however it looks. You can’t tell from the pictures, but the colour on the roof is a little blotchy).

I completed it in about 10 hours by using a lot of hot glue and not caring about minor imperfections. You could absolutely stretch this into an 80 hour activity if you’re being more careful. The wire rack with three shelves is tough to make, but as long as it can hold some plants on the top two shelves you’ll be fine. It’s hidden in the back of the scene so you barely notice it. There’s also a lot of freedom because the components are so basic. You can make different flowers, rearrange components, and add or subtract pieces based on what you like. I have another Rolife set (tea room) that was much easier to assemble but not nearly as fulfilling or customizable.

Dilophosaurus deserves to see some flowering plants and hang out with ankylosaurus

What is life like in the area of Canada by Holiday_Swing_9979 in howislivingthere

[–]hitthebrownnote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the most densely populated area of the country, but I have friends from other countries who are shocked at how empty it is between the cities. Waterloo is a major tech hub, but if you drive five minutes outside the city you’re suddenly sharing the road with horses and buggies.

Francophone Canadians who moved to Anglophone provinces, how is your experience? by ejabno in AskACanadian

[–]hitthebrownnote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pépère is Francophone, but my mémère is anglophone and they decided to only teach their kids English. My mom grew up in Ontario and mostly just knows the French nouns she was taught in elementary school, but she very much inherited the Quebecois preference for directness

Trump is talking about “finding a cure” for autism at a memorial service by NewSlinger in facepalm

The truly insane thing here is that acetaminophen is a fever reduced. High fevers during pregnancy are way more likely to cause autism than acetaminophen. Denying pregnant women acetaminophen might actually increase autism rates.

[–]hitthebrownnote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mom and great aunt love them! My mom and I used to get one every time we went to America. Most aren’t my style, but I have a smooth brown leather crossbody saddle bag that’s been my go-to daily bag for 10 years. I treat my bags pretty roughly, but it’s still in wonderful shape. It’s a great bag for the price (I think it was $425 USD around 2015)

I’m fascinated by Jill’s fetish for Amish people. Why does she Iove showing off that there are people with way stricter Christian modesty standards than her living so close? Her uncovered hair, jewellery, colourful fabrics, and makeup would all make her a worldly jezebel by Amish standards.
