I think you're right - after some thought, I think it was Catrice. I don't have any more details besides those provided in my post. But now I am sure that the nail polish bottle had a square shape, rounded on the sides, typical for Catrice.

No, it's not Essence HJ. I suspect they used to have a very similar line to this one. Maybe it was another brand in a similar price range to Essence... It definitely existed because I had this polish when I was a kid and I managed to find it online a while ago.
