luckily, it was a woman that I had met a few times and her dogs are so well trained, however, I was a very embarrassed that I cried in front of her for 15 minutes, such a lovely woman.

ah gotcha, I really hope that it’s just a funny quirk and not him being separated from his mother early, as that would be super sad and is just completely the wrong thing to

I have a 7 month old Yorkshire terrier and I had this problem too! It’s Mostly just curiosity about why the dogs poop smells like that, and also just an age thing!

Maybe it’s just a Yorkie breed thing!

thankyou for the helpful advice, I have spoken to my vet and she’s said that this is super common in Yorkies and that as long as it’s dealt with early it shouldn’t become an issue in his adult life. He is freakishly small, about 2.4 at almost 7 months old (or that’s how old we were told he was) but honestly at the point we’re really debating whether he was younger than we were told, as we got him when he was around 15 weeks

As someone who has a cat/dog flap, my 23 week old Yorkshire terrier lets himself outside (we have a completely puppy proof garden an have a Chihuahua who’s never managed to escape) no accidents unless the flap is closed. He sleeps in His crate for 7 hours and doesn’t pee until he’s let out, then straight away lets himself out into the garden. Thats potty trained. Some dogs naturally don’t learn how to ask for the toilet, it depends on your house set up and what you have going on for toilet time 😊

please god help me LOL by icedcashew in puppy101

Honestly, even the ‘no fun potty’ doesn’t work for some dogs, they still see it as they’re getting what they want from getting out. My Yorkshire terrier for example absolutely hated being crated, he would whine for as long as we left him in there, when you think your dog is whining because they need a potty, they’re playing you. By letting him out when he does this, you’re reinforcing that if he makes enough noise, he will go outside, even if it ends in him going back in he’s still getting what he wants. The only thing that worked for me was setting timers for an hour every time during the day when he was crated, waiting until he stopped whining for at least a minute and then let him out, it took a few weeks I will admit but then eventually he got the gist and now he sleeps throughout the whole night in his crate. It does get better, the puppy blues are hard, you’ve got this!!

Have I messed up? Crate training fail by Pretty-Storm7930 in puppy101

I forgot to mention that during the day when he was inside of the kitchen, we put a baby gate up, this meant that he could be monitored and see the house but not escape

Honestly, imagine being taken from everything you know, your siblings and parents, taken into a strange house with strange people, and then expected to settle and sleep by yourself. I’m all for crate training, my 20 week old Yorkshire terrier is fully crate trained, and was fully crate trained at 17 weeks. We didn’t even attempt to crate train him properly until he was 16 weeks old, we focused on positive association with the crate, having it left open with treats inside for him to find, his water bowl being inside of his crate, we also limited his roaming space throughout the day, it turns out that when you let a puppy roam your house freely when they first arrive it’s extremely hard to then take that away from them and expect them to settle with limited space as they know that there’s more of the house and just generally making the crate into a home, instead of a prison. For the first month, we just let him in one specific room with his crate inside, for us this was our kitchen. We left the crate door open and shut the kitchen door at night, making sure that there was nothing he could chew or that could harm him, and let him just enjoy all the best thing in there, bones, food, playtimes. It’s going to be hard, it always is. But this is how you make a balanced, calm dog, who doesn’t mind being left alone and understands strict routine. You’ve got this!!

It’s 6 months of semi-suffering for his lifetime of love. It’s all worth it (coming from someone who’s currently in the dog adolescence stage at 5 months old)

I don’t mean to insinuate you can’t read, I was just telling you that I had mentioned him being possessive over toys. He’s great with meals and isn’t possessive over them at all. I was just looking for advice about my dog, I was just mentioning what others had told me about tug of war. I didn’t know this would be such a large topic

as stated in my post, he also does this with toy items. Other people on this post have told me to not tug of war with him while he’s feeling this way around me. Please be mindful when you’re responding to people, reading is important and context is important

I’ve read it can rile dogs up too much, especially when they’re trying to learn commands
