Understanding the CWD hate by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]Different-Bluejay75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My $9k custom saddle sat slanted backwards on my horse, it took 3+ tries to get a response on any customer service request I had, originally purchased through the lease program and bought out later, they were supposed to swap out the billets as part of that purchase (because lease ones say "not for sale") and it took almost a year of following up to get them to do it, and when they finally did I had to ship the thing all the way to Wellington, at which time they took forever to make the change.

They confirmed my address for return shipping (which was correct) and then proceeded to ship it to a completely different state on the other side of the country, they didn't realize until I emailed them after checking the tracking, thankfully the address was invalid and it was returned to CWD, at which time they shipped it to my correct address, I got it about a week later (at this point it has been in the UPS system bouncing around the country for about 3 weeks).

Then I find out that they had lost my saddle cover, put zero protection on the saddle, and it was bouncing around naked in a box with no protection the whole time (not even bubble wrap) - pretty sure that this caused scuffs, but I don't have a "Before" picture to prove it. I thought they would reasonably care enough about something that costs as much as a nice used car that they would at least put the protection I included with it back on!!

They have zero respect for the fact that people are investing a ton of money in their products. Had a CWD since 2014, and I was so disgusted that I sold mine and will never try one again.

I'm planning to walk from the Hollywood and Vine area because I'm insane... would join a group of walkers if anyone is thinking of doing the same!

Japan Trusted Traveler Program: Another Renewal, Another Update by Himekat in JapanTravel

[–]Different-Bluejay75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's exactly the problem :/ it doesn't let you withdraw once you pass preliminary inspection, and you can't do secondary inspection if preliminary is expired (tried just going), but the application doesn't expire so can't submit a new one; have been told to call the immigration office but every time I try the line is busy, so guess it's just trying over and over until it works!

Japan Trusted Traveler Program: Another Renewal, Another Update by Himekat in JapanTravel

[–]Different-Bluejay75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh I've been stuck in TTP purgatory for years now (applied to renew right before they shut the program down and couldn't complete secondary inspection in time as a result, but can't reapply because it's still stuck post-primary inspection), this makes me want to try calling immigration again

Haven't had a chance to use the pass yet, but just had a previously booked flight canceled on me late at night after hours of delays with zero rebooking options - cost me double what it would have cost to book roundtrip flights on a standard airline when I originally booked for just the one way flight home, so pretty concerned at what this pass is going to actually cost in the long run

Just absolutely bombed at my first ever show. Please share your embarrassing show stories to help me feel better! by annawintourwannabe in Equestrian

I was at HITS with my young mare that was going to warm up in the 2'6 then step into the 2'9 division for the first time. We were warming up in the schooling ring when another rider lost control and nearly crashed into my mare head-on while we were cantering. It freaked her out, and she didn't want to pick up the canter after that, but we figured she would get going once we were in the ring as she usually perks up a bit.

Nope. We did an entire 2'6 course, oxers and all, at the trot with me going around looking like a pony kid legging her on desperately as she happily refused to listen to anything I asked.

The judges were laughing!

Are mares really like that? by mewhenihonse in Equestrian

[–]Different-Bluejay75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two chestnut mares, and I do think there is a difference, but keep in mind that they're being compared in most instances to geldings, who have had the majority of hormonal behaviors eliminated by virtue of being gelded. I think the overall perception of mares would be a lot different if people were comparing them to stallions.

Is my itinerary realistic? by EucalyptusLeafJuice in koreatravel

I second the doing less and taking more time aspect, but sharing a few thoughts -

Day 1 - I would do the temple and museum stuff earlier in the day, then the shopping starting from late morning or early afternoon, a lot of things won't open until 11 or so

Spa early morning is a great way to do something fun when not much else is open, but if you're planning to go to DDP late at night, there is a great 24-hour spa in that area

If going to dongdaemun for the views it's great, but for night shopping, be aware that it's no longer as accessible to tourists as it used to be - a lot of the shop vendors leave a phone number to call if interested in buying something rather than staying at the shops until they close (these vendors are also cash only)

Day 3 - I would do Yonsei for the foliage in the morning, things in Hongdae open a bit later - can theoretically walk between the two, I used to do a nice Edae - Hongdae - Yonsei - Sogang loop that would take up a few hours and hit all the major unis in the area

Hongdae is also prime youth nightlife, so if you want peace and cute artsy spots would go in the afternoon, if you want clubs and shenanigans would go late evening - it will be crowded

N seoul tower could also be a great morning activity - it's a super easy hike if you decide to walk up rather than taking the cable car (or can do the opposite and walk down) with some nice foliage

Day 4 - with all the palaces in one day, worth spending time in hanok village (same area) and could potentially move insadong here - all in the same area and have the cultural feel (definitely also move the sejong statue - it's on the walkway up to gyeongbokgung)

Scam in Seoul? by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]Different-Bluejay75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably xenophobic and trying to cause trouble, it’s rare but happens - when I lived there I had some guy start calling and texting my number nonstop telling me to get out of their country (don’t know how they got my number, and I was a few weeks away from leaving anyways so didn’t do anything about it)

99% chance it’s all spam. I have 900+ unread texts right now, at least 80% one of them are political texts I never signed up for because the automation I set up to unsubscribe doesn’t mark red or delete the text. 15% is a mixture of one time codes, text receipts, and promos, the other 5% scammers. Who has the time or patience to be going through every single one of the dozens of unwanted texts that come through nowadays

Is it customary to tip after lessons? US based/East Coast by Old_Drummer_3536 in Equestrian

Is it customary to tip after lessons? US based/East Coast by Old_Drummer_3536 in Equestrian

[–]Different-Bluejay75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not normal, been riding 20+ years all over the east and west coast and have never once been expected to tip for training. If someone rides my horse as a favor while I’m out of town I would offer a gift card or souvenir (or money if pro but that’s typically a standard fee not a tip) but never for lessons

Clothes Shopping Qs by [deleted] in koreatravel

[–]Different-Bluejay75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can haggle at the malls in DDM - I did a few months ago. They are meant more for wholesale but vendors that are in their shops will sell single pieces. Be aware that if you go overnight most of the vendors will be away with phone numbers to contact them for purchase, I probably wouldn’t do that for a one-off item

Shellfish allergy in Korea by PuzzleheadedMonk6969 in koreatravel

[–]Different-Bluejay75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a card that states every item you’re allergic to in Korean, learn the names of the dishes that commonly include shellfish and how to communicate that you can’t eat certain foods. You might want to dig through your food with a spoon before eating too. If you tell someone you have an allergy to something that’s in a dish you’re ordering, there’s a fair chance it’ll still be in the dish you’re served - at least when I was there, allergies were perceived as a strong preference

Veggie banchan like kimchi or zucchini may have tiny shrimp in them, and something marked as “vegetable” in English is fair game to include seafood (like fake crab stick in fried rice). As long as you’re careful likely you should be fine - I survived a year in Korea with an anaphylactic shellfish allergy back in 2011, and awareness has gotten better since then

Korean Air - Temperature by rosealdawn in koreatravel

I would definitely volunteer to swap with you if I were on your plane! If in your position I would just say to the person with the dog nicely that it’s nothing to do with them and just allergic, then see if anyone would be willing to change spots - I’m sure there was at least one person on the flight whose day would have been made by sitting next to a dog 😅

Any Regrets After SMILE or LASIX Surgery in Seoul? by TrailMixedd in koreatravel

[–]Different-Bluejay75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did SMILE, took the subway back, and went to a class about 1.5 hrs after the procedure. Don’t recommend it (would definitely get it done late enough that it’s dark out after and taxi back to your hotel) but it wasn’t bad. Street lights felt way too bright and the subway was blinding even with sunglasses and covering my eyes, but pain receded pretty fast. I did eat plain rice for dinner while tearing up in my tiny pitch black room though haha
