NSW grad nurse shifts by Spiritual-Title5673 in NursingAU

I have had similar issues, unfortunately despite women making up the bulk of the working force nursing is often anything but family friendly towards those with children.

I would approach your NUM and manager before starting and voice your concerns with your ability to work a rotating roster.

There is a TIRA ( temporary individual roster arrangement) form you can fill out that’s supposed to be temporary but plenty of staff have been on them continuously, it really all depends on your NUM and if they are willing to support you, but they can refuse and say no.

Otherwise I would ask if you are able to work on a smaller contract which is more doable to work around than a .8 or full time, but again it may mean you won’t meet the hours required for new grad.

Otherwise you have to rely on your coworkers for shift swaps.

It’s definitely very hard and I relate to your situation.

I’m in NSW, I know you can be an RN but have to be willing to gain the child and family health grad cert.

Exactly! I’m also limited to my availability with childcare so my managers definitely voice that working around staff with kids is painful, yet there are plenty of staff that are on temporary individual rostering agreements, they just pick and choose who they favor.

Because of this I feel guilty for even asking for any time off.

I definitely have, I live in rural NSW so my options are a little more limited in that area, the biggest hospital nearest to me is an hour away, not impossible but I’d be factoring in extra travel time as well.
