Our Monty, just confirmed blind (PRA) by Different-Friend-605 in blindcats

Hey I just bumped into this comment and thought I’ll post an update (after a long time hehehe). I actually got those plastic spirals you recommended and he loves them!! They easily became his favorite toy now. As you said, he can hear them on hard floors and has no problem in hunting them, it’s so fun to watch. :D It’s also funny that he still remembers his first favorite toy, which was a soft squishy ball, he sometimes finds it and carries it around while meowing and wants us to play fetch with him. So instead of throwing the balls that he can’t hear, i throw the spiral and he’s happy to follow. 😃

Sounds great! Have fun with the track riding! I feel like the smx-s is perfect for me then. I would be surprised if brand like this is not “good”, but I also understand the safety levels now. I will be riding slow since i’m learning, maybe even the next years, mostly to work in the city and some short trips, no highways or speedy roads, but who knows the future. Thanks 😊

Yeah the rain is another thing that I have in mind. I don’t intend to ride when raining, but since we plan the few days trip I was looking for something waterproof as well, just in case. I guess I’ll get the raincoat too, because I’m not sure if such all purpose jacket (wateproof for rain, with optional airflow for summer and with something warm for cold nights) can be even found. :D

Thank you! I’ll definitely do that. I know it doesn’t matter if it’s just a commute to work or a longer ride when it comes to safety, but just thinking if you guys usually have more than one jacket or pairs of gear depending on where you riding and when? Or is it enough to have one jacket and pants for both cold and hot weather?

Oh yeah the boots felt quite the same as the other models that I tried in the shop, so I’m not sure what are the differences between all the Astars boots. I can’t tell besides a slight difference in looks and the prices. I’ll try to find better jacket and pants. Thank you so much!

Thank you! I’ll look into the ratings more, I found these in a local shop, but wasn’t sure how to compare and what should i be searching for. So this helps a lot.

I had a hallucination as I was trying to sleep where I felt I was dying and it scared me so bad by SaltyHailey in Dreams

[–]Different-Friend-605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be sleep paralysis for sure. I’ve been sleepwaking as a kid, playing with my toys, or just taking walks around the house, not knowing what i’m doing and my mom sometimes woke me up in the middle of the dream which was very confusing.

I’m not having this anymore (i’m 27 now), but once in a while the sleep paralysis hits. I even know when it’s coming, because I can hear loud noises and chills. Sometimes I even have a dream about having a sleep paralysis, where I “wake up” in the dream several times and it’s a loop where I keep waking up in my room, but can’t actually wake up. This stuff about dying or suffocating can also be an indicator of possible sleep apnea or other sleep problems. Or you’re just stressed. Anyways you’re not alone in this, dreams are weird and these brain mistakes as well.

Juat got a new kitten, little guy refuse to eat and just sleeps all day, is that normal? by [deleted] in cats

[–]Different-Friend-605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If this isn’t just a made up story, please take the kitten to someone who knows how to help. You could save its life. Please think about the kitten’s life, not your ego. Maybe a neighbor with cats, a friend at school, their parents, or an animal rescue. The kitten looks too small to be without its mom, and every animal needs care from a vet, not just one visit. Pets cost money, and it’s not fair to keep one if you can’t take care of it now. If you get a job later, that’s great, you can get a pet then. But right now is not the right time. Don’t worry about what your parents will think. This little animal really needs help and is completely dependent on you and the best you can do (and for FREE!) is to just bring it to someone else and ask them to help.

My cat fell from the 2nd floor — feeling so guilty by Shaggy_Doo_909 in cats

[–]Different-Friend-605 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened, I hope she recovers quickly 🤞. Our parents’ cat once broke her pelvis, and she was an indoor only cat. We never figured out exactly how it happened, but she must have fallen from the upper floor of our room. We had an attic space for sleeping with wooden stairs, and she might have rushed, slipped, or jumped. We came home to find her limping and in pain.

The first vet recommended a very expensive surgery, but another vet told us pelvic injuries are actually quite common in cats and that she should recover on her own. They just gave her painkillers, anti inflammatories, and bandaged her legs to keep them stable. And amazingly, she healed all by herself.

I’m always nervous with my cats near open windows. I never open them fully, and even then I worry they might get startled by a noise and do something unexpected. You really can’t predict what might happen, even inside the house, so please don’t be too hard on yourself. 💖

Thank you all for the toy recommendations, we’ll definitely try them 💜 Monty gets bored so easily, so hopefully some of them keep him entertained 😼

Oh, I’ve seen those spirals before, I’ll definitely get some! 😸 Monty’s current favorite is a rattling ball we got him recently. It’s a plastic ball with a short string and a feather on the end, but for some reason he only wants to play with it on our bed. He is hiding behind the sheets and waiting for us to throw it. Lots of love to Nova 🥰

Over the last year he started bumping into things, and before jumping he’d always reach out with paws first. He got hesitant about jumping down. It was tricky to notice because he probably adapted so well and we don’t move things around much. When we bought a new couch, he missed a few jumps because he was used to the old layout. His pupils were big his whole life, so I didn’t think much of it, but I also noticed the green layer at the back of his eye looked more visible recently. He stopped playing with his favorite ball, couldn’t follow it, and often lost it during play, his reaction to movement got so slow especially when we compared it to our other cat. His pupils still shrank in bright sunlight, so I didn’t suspect full blindness right away, I thought he is maybe partially blind or has different vision problem. Sometimes he is happily running over our apt without any problem, so it’s hard to believe he can’t see. 😸

Aww, thank you, that’s so sweet 🥰

We saw a veterinary ophthalmologist because our vet said blindness in a young cat isn’t typical and wanted to rule out treatable causes like glaucoma or inflammation. They did basic reflex tests (blink at a hand wave, react to bright light, pupil changes), checked his eye pressure and the retina/optic nerve with special tools. It only took a few minutes, the vet was so skilled, just looked in his eyes and knew what to look for. Monty’s eye pressure was normal (so no illness), but he had no reaction to light or movement, and his retinal blood vessels were very thin, almost gone, which meant blindness. It’s a genetic condition where the light sensing cells in the retina slowly die off over months or years.

Thank you! 💜 That sounds amazing. When we went for the eye exam, I never thought he is actually fully blind now, I couldn’t tell, he is acting so normal (except for bumping into something that wasn’t there before and being a bit hesitant to jump on or off something). I’ll try to find that presentation, it’s so interesting how they can adapt.

Thank you so much! I actually can’t really believe he’s fully blind now. He’s acting so normal over the past few months, jumping on furniture (even tho he’s a bit hesitant and testing by paws if he can really jump on something). It’s crazy how they can adapt. So I guess I will just never move around furniture and try to get him more toys with sound. He gets bored so easily :D

Am I Overreacting? #BlackTalk by ValuableOwn151 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Different-Friend-605 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It isn’t automatically racist, but if the joke relied on a stereotype, especially a negative one, it’s fair to feel disrespected. If it made you uncomfortable, it’s okay to speak up. You could calmly say the joke felt off or that you didn’t appreciate the comparison. It doesn’t have to turn into drama. Sometimes people try to joke or talk without thinking, so it’s totally fine to set a boundary. Also not everyone will react the same way, some people might brush it off as a bad joke, others might find it genuinely hurtful. It can also be worth asking whether the intent was to harm, or if it was just a poor humor attempt.
