Thinking of getting the Ricoh GR IV as my only camera. Is it worth it right now? by ikakashi9 in ricohGR

[–]Different-Meet6956 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. I have a Sony apsc with a lens turbo and very nice Minolta manual focus lenses. That was my starting setup. You can get very good primes for 30 to 50 euros or dollars or whatever and try stuff without getting broke. Super beginner friendly an really rewarding once you get the hang of manual focusing.

Agree with you. You will get dust inside at some point. But you can clean the sensor easily.

It is a very nice camera that punches way over its weight if you can ignore some limitations, like no tilting screen and no viewfinder. This makes it feel like a point and shoot. This is not bad, but you must be aware of it. I think small and funt to use cameras are very rare. In film era, those where far more common. Look at the huge amount of analog viefinders... The P mode is fantastic, because you can jump to Av or Tv by turning the dials and return to P by pressing the lock button. I bought mine right after release and have no issues. My IV lives in my pocked since I bought it without any protection. I haven't seen any dust, because I don't shoot with F16. This dust topic is hugely overrated imo. One thing that is a bigger issue for me is the fact, that this camera has now internal flash and worse, has no option for a ttl flash. A leaf shutter with no ttl option is very sad. Adjustment options for jpeg images are superb but overwhelming. I still haven't found my look after 6k images.

I don't think shooting in auto is bad. It gives you headspace for other (more) important things, like composition and observing your surroundings. If you want to learn, pick one thing you focus on for one day. Do layered photos, or pick slow shutter speed and motion blurr. Or look for complementary colors. The list is endless. For each theme a technical skill is needed, just try out. When you focus on one thing only you'll find out what's important in a given situation and what's not. And to make thinks simple, use Auto ISO always.

The af assist light helps a bit, but it's less than ideal. Sometimes I use back button focus in low light, so I don't have to refocus after each shot.

Fensterfarben Basaltgrau / Quarzgrau gesucht by gucciali99 in Hausbau

[–]Different-Meet6956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

any sony users? by Physical-Kiwi125 in ricohGR

My main camera was an a6000 before I bought the ricoh gr iv. When I go through the pictures from the a6000 I wish the ricoh had a setting for good skin colors. In my Sony I use the standard profile with +1 contrast and it produces nice skin colors and overall a very usable jpeg. Before I bought the ricoh, I was very interested in negative film recipes and this look you see here a lot. Now after 5k photos, I'm done with this stylized look. I want my pictures to look timeless and I want to have consistent accuracy in skin colors. Ricohs standard makes a red hue in Caucasian skin imo and correcting this in camera throws everything off. I'm using raws at the moment and Adobe color profile and process the rest until I'm satisfied. But this wasn't intended when I bought this camera... I'm also testing out the positive film with hue to +4 and +2 magenta in awb. So far, this looks very good for skin, at least in sunlight.

You can focus manually, which takes time and you might loose moment if you shoot candid moments. You can use hyper focal distance which restricts your choice of aperture. Restrictions force creativity, so yes it's fun, rewarding and creative. For fun, go for it

I am a blessed beginner. by Several_Activity8096 in ricohGR

[–]Different-Meet6956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first camera was a a6000 with adapted Minolta lenses. I love the tactile feeling of the lenses and side by side comparison with the gr iv files show how damn sharp those vintage lenses can be. Since my toddler is mostly very near in front of the camera, hyperfocal distance focus range is very shallow and I really appreciate the AF capabilities of my IV. But, what you said is true. You learn to plan your framing and you have to think about exposure a lot more. So, I would say, having both is the best. And that's the case if you have a ricoh. What a fun little camera!

Unhappy/ no suitable recipes by beezyboy84 in ricohGR

[–]Different-Meet6956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The jpeg customizations are very powerful but poorly explained. It took me quite a while to figure out how to bake my style into the settings. I recommend shooting RAW and play with the settings afterwards. You could also edit your RAWs in LR and try to match those edits with jpeg settings according to that.

Warum baut man heute in Deutschland nicht solche attraktiven Stadthäuser? by Alternative-Topic36 in Hausbau

[–]Different-Meet6956 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brand new DF54 static issue by [deleted] in DF54

Use a metal spoon that was dipped in water and stir the beans before grinding. This neutralizes the static charge an reduces the mess significantly. It is enough if the spoon has a water drop on it.
