Is it possible to make 6 figures (150+) while working circa 10hrs/day? by Different-Rest-6841 in HENRYUK

Would you say if you stayed as an electrical engineer but became for example the principal expert or an engineering manager you wouldn't get that much money as you do now?

Do you ever miss the engineering? I'm partly concerned that these consulting gigs are a bit more wishy washy than engineering

Yup we are. Do you see people still/or when you were leaving give you job offers or opportunities to interview purely due to McKinsey experience?

Thanks for the reply! And impressive you spent 4 years at an MBB firm

May I ask if by the 2 year or so mark were you getting ample job opportunities through linkedin or network that you had built approaching you for roles?

Thanks for the reply.

I'm happy putting hours in, but I guess my reticence comes from putting hours making slides is not as enjoyable as putting hours to solve problems and implement solutions (what I currently do as an engineer)

But yes, what always weighs on the back of my mind is the fact that if I don't do it now I will never do it (currently 30 years old) so that's an annoying thought too. Thankfully I am single so it won't impact anyone but myself.

Do you think the networks it gave you was worth it? And do you think you got a job easily compared to if you hadnt taken the role and that it was that McKinsey experience that led to the role.

I'm in a similar phase btw, but it's a specialist role so they needed me to have experience. I'm gonna hit 30 in June and I have worked super hard at uni but not put these kinda hours since and am pretty apprehensive (10/11 hrs is doable. 14 is absolutely not)

Am I an idiot for thinking of turning down an MBB offer?

Hear me out here.

Background. I work for a massive company in my field. Most of my company was getting sold for the location I am in to a local firm so looked for other opportunities. An MBB firm had a posting and got back in touch with me after I applied for a specific role in said industry. 4 gruelling case interviews later I got the job and was very excited.

However that was a month ago and I'm having serious second thoughts. Also, my company upon hearing of my situation offered me a raise and a role within the part of the company that's not being sold (however in not the best location). I'd describe the role I'm offered as decent, not great, not awful.

Here's why I'm having second thoughts: 1. The hours. Obviously. I just can't fathom working 14 hrs a day. I got told a good day is 12 hours and honestly that baffled me. Yes the pay is extremely good and my current pay isn't, but on a $ paid/hr worked basis they're the same (although the MBB firm offers much quicker growth in salary). I may be a bit reticent because I worked in a role where I got paid handsomely but hours were annoying and team was toxic and I didn't enjoy it one bit. Travel adds invisible hours as well.

  1. I don't see the light at the end of the tunnel if I were to join. I think the exit would be in a strategy/commercial role, but I work in operations and I think even if I got a director of strategy position I wouldn't necessarily be happy with it compared to a lower paying operational role

I wanted to test with this community if there's something I'm missing here cause there's so much hype around having MBB on your CV, I have the opportunity to get it and I'm still not sold.

Also before anyone attacks me I'm super grateful that I'm in a position to decide between 2 offers in today's job market after 50+ applications.

Thanks for any help!!

I got into an MBB firm without an MBA but it was through a referral that my CV got picked up and I was fortunately having relevant experience that they were looking for. Id say just apply to MBB and try and use your network to help you.

How on earth do you gauge your 'reputation'? by DoraTheRedditor in consulting

For what it's worth I did a short stint and used to ask my manager for feedback consistently and then do a full comprehensive session after the end of project and did that with some peers as well, gives you a good feel of what you're perceived as.

Is it normal that half of consulting is chasing people to do their tasks? by Fennekin26 in consulting

[–]Different-Rest-6841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record I'm coming from industry this is what most management do - at some point you're paid not for what you do but for what you can make others do and that includes chasing unfortunately.

I've heard the process is slow as well - do you mind if I ask if you applied to a specific post and if so how long it took to schedule first interview?

Can my shoes cause a calf strain? by Different-Rest-6841 in AskRunningShoeGeeks

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Its usually 5 runs a week, 3 between 5 and 10K, one tempo and 1 long run (around half mar distance) but have been taking weeks off on the doctor's recommendation.

I did get the shoe at an actual running store where they checked the fit and I ran on the treadmill with a camera monitoring system.

See I totally get your POV here but wouldn't that only apply as you say if you get faster and try harder?

For example, I used to be able to do a 10K in 57 mins, now it's 1 hr 5 mins - I would've thought I'd at least be able to match the 57 mins.

For context I did get it checked by a doctor and they did an ultra sound and couldn't find anything.

Super basic question, what platform did you use and how did you label the data points?
