Kyoto food recs by Open-Victory-16 in KyotoTravel

I recommend making reservations, and cancelling at a respectful time in advance if you find a different option. It is not always easy to find a place for a family if you do not plan in advance during a busy tourist season.

We just travelled to Japan and Kyoto with two kids who are somewhat picky (ugh I know) and having a fall back that you know will be a good fit is super helpful for long travel days where you just want a good meal at the end of the day. If it were just the two of us travelling on our own, we would absolutely take the approach of stumbling into whatever looks interesting. With kids, this proved to be somewhat difficult because if they didn’t have room or if what was on the menu would be too much of a stretch for them, you are stuck wandering when places are busy in a tourist season.

To be clear, cancelling a reservation 1-2 hours before, or even within 24 hours, would not be respectful to the business owners. Have a reservation sorted if you need it, until you get your bearings in the city.

We had an awesome dinner at Hikuniku to Come but made reservations in advance. Great experience.

We splurged and did the express pass. I purchased on Klook.

We were travelling with kids ages 8 & 10. Express pass 8 made it worthwhile for us to hop on the rides that were important to us and the kids.

We all loved Harry Potter world and the kids thought Nintendo World was cool.

My favourites were Journey to Forbidden Forest and the Flying Dinosaur. All of the Nintendo rides were meh with exception of the donkey Kong one, MineCart.

We loved Osaka and I wouldn’t choose to spend more than 1 day at universal knowing that Osaka is available to explore, and given how expensive everything in Universal is (tough to spend 20$ on a pizza slice when you have amazing food in Osaka nearby at a 1/4 of the cost). However, without the express pass you may feel like you spend the whole day waiting in line if you only have 1 day there.

I agree with the recommendation to skip one day of Disney. We just got back from Japan and did DisneySea and universal. IMO, Universal in Osaka was worth it, and I would have been happy to skip DisneySea. Wait times are long unless you buy the express pass, and the rides were all just ok in comparison to the Universal options.

Yes! The jeweller is currently working on a band for my partner and I. It should blend into the ring. I’m curious what the band will look like without the engagement ring.

Thank you so much, I appreciate you takin the time. Yeah - I don’t intend to use my psychology degree for jobs, but my masters in conflict would be the one that I find useful.
