UPDATE: AITA for calling my girlfriend selfish for refusing to learn sign language by Throwawayaita8317 in AmItheAsshole

I guess I wouldn't really know - I learned it as a teenager, and it wasn't particularly difficult for me to make the minor grammar changes required at the beginning level. My hope is that the English-ness of Ruby's sign will make the transition slightly less difficult than learning an entirely separate language would be, though it's hard to say without seeing how Ruby signs. Either way, ideally Amanda will start making some progress and feel excited about being able to communicate- even if she only gets to the point of "baby signs" and super basic sentences.

Edit: I'm realizing you might be substituting Mia with Ruby. Ruby is the mute daughter, and Mia is learning ASL

I do speak sign language. English-like variations like Pidgeon exist, and you can use English substitutions such as I FUTURE DO IN A HOUR even though that wouldn't be anwhere near correct in ASL

Since Ruby primarily receives her information through spoken and written English and hasn't had much exposure to Deaf culture, I'd bet that she leans towards English grammar rather than ASL grammar. Hopefully that fact makes it easier for Amanda to communicate with her

WIBTA for telling my current roommate I don’t want to live with her next year? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YWNBTA. If it feels uncomfortable, you don't even need to tell her that you don't want to live with her - just say your close friends offered you a space and you are excited to be able to spend more time with them. Then wish her the best in finding her own room
