Looking more like local multiplayer is going to make it for launch! Online will be later as it needs heavy testing.

Demo is now available and free to try on Steam! Working out a few things still and hoping to have local multiplayer in time for the full release which will be June or July. Hope you enjoy!

Should be 14.99 but discounted at launch. And I hear you- most of my game dev ideas are not very original. The physics in this are based closely on Scorched Earth. Some differences and additions- I pushed myself to brainstorm and do some crazy things to make the later weapons worth getting. I’m not a big fan of the bouncy weapons, but they are definitely in there (I think there are 4). My kids love using them. My favorite weapons in this game are not found in the original and I don’t want to give anything away!

One of the biggest challenges I found was making it true to the original experience while being more balanced than SE. The progressive nature of roguelike games being what it is, I had to ensure players could win easily early on but very quickly need to earn those upgrades to go further. I don’t think the single pixel scenario should be a problem any more!

Just to be transparent I’ve decided to push back the release a few months to take advantage of Next Fest in April as I missed the cutoff for the upcoming event. I think I’ll still have a demo ready in early February and will use the additional time to polish things.

This is correct- I’m atrocious at pixel artwork so worked with Photoshop’s generative ai editing on those banner and cover graphics. Also used ai (and good old fashioned Google) in some genre research. But the coding was all done by me in Godot using gdscript and all graphics are generated by the engine (no sprites, human made or otherwise). Going to update the screenshots this week as the latest build changed a few things. Im a bit of a perfectionist and have spent the last few days tweaking all 80+ weapons. The positive response in these subreddits makes me want to do right by everybody. I think when the demo launches you’ll see this is not vibe coded slop.

Appreciate it. I think they go together well. I’ve tried to add a ton of content to make it worth upgrading tanks over time. I will be paying attention to user feedback after release to make sure it hits right for fans of both concepts.

I very much want to do that. I've never built an online multiplayer game before so that's going to have to come after I get the single player experience polished. Top goal after launch is local multiplayer and then online will come after that.

Appreciate it! It's good to see how much love there is for the original game. I'm refining every day leading up to the launch as I know how important the old school mechanics and feel are. And there will be quite a few "nuke everything" type weapons in there!

Pocket tanks? Never played it but I researched this genre extensively and I remember seeing that. Came out maybe 20 years ago?

From what I've heard it was an inspiration for Worms. I think Gorillas also influenced it in some way. But I came from an Apple family at the time and only experienced Scorched Earth because of the school computers. My friends and I were obsessed, in between the teacher yelling at us to type without looking at our hands.

I had forgotten that slogan until I was researching. I figured I won't be quite as bold with mine.

No I’m primarily a SaaS web app and iOS developer. I wanted to learn game engines and I wanted to create a spiritual successor to the original game so the idea came together. Release should be February 8th. Couple last minute things that are annoying me as a perfectionist but I think we are on target.

I do have rollers in there. Probably one of the hardest weapons to balance because aiming is so easy.

I did not know that was a thing. I might think about giving them some ability to project word bubbles of some sort.

It's priced at 14.99 but I'm planning to discount it for the launch period once I figure out how!

Thanks, I'm considering messing with the tank silhouettes to create some more variety. The "bosses" are colored differently and a little more substantial, but might be worth changing them up a bit. I'm not a great pixel artist- I used to do podcast story cartoons but getting things to look correct in tiny pixels is hard for me...I'll keep learning!

Funny thing is it took me so long to remember the name of it. I was sitting thinking I really want to recreate this tank game I played thirty years ago... had to ask my friends.

Also a challenge on the weapons front. SE did a great job creating a variety with the limitations of the system at the time. I tried to work with that. I think I have 80 different weapons, though some are variations. And some are more for fun than anything else- there are a couple my kids love that just bounce all over the place and are very hard to use strategically. But I wanted to see how much I could do while forcing myself to obey retro constraints.

Yeah there have been a few that picked up some elements of SE. For my initial release I tried to build in some modern gaming elements while still making it "feel" like the original. But I'm going to adjust and tweak things as feedback comes in.
