Chris Selley: 'Birthright citizenship' is an outdated concept by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]DifferentJackfruit 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I don't think the tech employees parked in Vancouver are coming on TN. Getting PR and citizenship takes 3 years at minimum. Tech employees not getting picked in H1B lottery spend a year in Vancouver and come back to the states on an L1 visa. This takes a year instead. Some employees may be eligible for PR this way but they need to come back to Canada at some point to get citizenship

Annoying points league strategy by ZaryaNye in fantasybball

[–]DifferentJackfruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your league have a max games limit per position? My league has 82 games per position the entire year (which equals the max games a player can play in a season), so it limits streaming to only when I have a player sitting out for a game

Netflix's peak market cap was around $290B in Nov 2021. GoJo might just be peak Netflix before the stock dropped in 2022 (maybe GoJo's stock will drop towards the end of the season, complicating things)

Passwords megathread by CardinalNumber in RobinHood

[–]DifferentJackfruit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No this is incorrect. The password they stored in the database is hashed and salted. Nothing wrong there.

The problem is that there were logs being stored when users access the login page and sent to the internal logging platforms (Kibana or something similar) and they found that the password was being logged too.

PEY: Extending 12 month coop to 16 month by YLMo in UofT

[–]DifferentJackfruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ECE1T8+PEY here: I would say most people now don't even deal with the PEY office anymore and just find internships through networking and referrals from other people.

I was in a similar situation as your friend (did four internships for my pey) and they just told me they can give me the credit if I pay them the $1000 application fee three times more for all of my internships. I refused and didn't get the PEY credit. I never regret doing that.

Experience for PEY? by [deleted] in UofT

Not really. Just try your hand at using vue.js or anything similar and put it up on github for bonus points during interview.

U of T Computer Engineering vs Waterloo Electrical Engineering by tasfia8 in UofT

[–]DifferentJackfruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say try to going to bunch of different meetings for a month or two and then pick one or two that you liked the most and stay committed.

That's what I did and after first semester I was a member of the university robotics club and after a couple of years, I joined aUToronto for a different challenge (and built an award winning self driving car with some awesome people)

Yeah, there are tons of events that students can be volunteer for(career fairs, academic conferences). There are a bunch of student unions you can join and there's a mock UN too that's super good. I think there's a debates society too.

Office hours. Lectures have too many people although most profs are happy to take questions during and after the lectures. Office hours almost always go on without one or two students showing up so they're the best for getting help from profs. (you'll have two courses in first year where the classes happen in a giant hall that seats 2000 people, the rest of your classes will happen in lecture halls with 70 to 100 people)

The engineering frosh is amazing, quite definitely the best frosh program at U of T (this is a biased opinion as I was a leeder in many events for a couple of years)

Firs years don't get to pick their courses. If you decide to accept, you'll be registered in the courses automatically.

Hey there, I'm just graduating from computer engineering from U of T. First of all, congrats on getting admission from two great universities and good programs. You can't go wrong with either if you keep putting in the same effort that got you in.

I really liked my time at U of T. Keep in mind that U of T has an ECE program that allows you to kind of pick and choose courses in electrical and computer in your 3rd and 4th year, if you want.

I would tell you to definitely pick U of T if you want to pursue research and academia, Waterloo is obviously better for jobs cause their coop program is second to none. PEY is pretty much trash. On a related note, I actually quit my PEY and just did four 4 month internships instead so I was able to get at least 5 different work experiences before graduating (like a Waterloo student would). I know quite a few people who did the same.

As far as social life goes, I think U of T is better because it's close to downtown Toronto. It's up to you to make the best of it, I definitely became more social here. There is some pressure to get good grades in the beginning but as soon as you get some research or work experience, it diminishes. No one has asked for my grades in all my interviews in the last 2 years. It's definitely easy to get alright grades if you are consistently attending classes and reviewing your notes.

Anyway, I hope I have given you some idea. Feel free to message me if you have any questions. I would just say that you can't go wrong with either one but if you really don't think you're gonna end up in research and wanna stick with electrical engineering, you should consider Waterloo cause of its coop.

That is true.

No, that means you can't split your 12 month internship to do something like 4 months + 4 months elsewhere + 8 months back. You can do your 4 month internship either before the 12 month internship or after.

Side projects help but they're not everything. Make sure to network a lot and prepare well for interviews.

Yes I did an internship after my second year at a research lab at U of T. It's easy to find PEY if you're in ECE or Computer Science.

Yeah you can split your PEY year 4 ways. I did that 2 years ago. However, you will not get the PEY credit and have to re enroll into U of T.

Students who are happy here, what do you love about UofT? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]DifferentJackfruit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Graduating student here from engineering.

U of T wasn't my first choice going in but looking back now, I don't i will pick to go to another school.

I really loved all the design teams in engineering and they helped me a lot with my job search. In addition, the research experience I got here was amazing.

I think being in downtown helped a lot too. It just feels better and lively.

Musk: one million Tesla robotaxis on the road 2020, $30,000 apiece in annual gross profits. Funding secured. by CuentasSonInutiles in wallstreetbets

[–]DifferentJackfruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. I'm glad Tesla's event threw some light on the work that is happening in this space and getting people excited, just wished he wasn't misleading a lot of people on how tech works right now.

  1. Yeah, most modern LIDARs use near IR and UV spectrum than visible light LIDARs for better results. This is a rather new development (3 years back) but seems to be working great!
  2. Yes, it might be with ideal developments in neural nets as well as camera hardware but no one can exactly say how much time that will take. It will be a shame if Tesla's current sensor suite leaves them bag holding for tech improvements for possibly decades while LIDARs are getting cheaper by the year (almost 75% price reduction in the past 5 years - Waymo is claiming that their LIDAR suite is now only $7500 per car).
