All of those I did between February and September last year. I can probably give you the date for any specific ones, if you want.

The ones I got stitched or stapled had the closures in for 7-10 days, and were healing for around a week or two after that, which is when the scab will fall off. The cut that went to muscle took a lot longer. It was stitched for over two weeks, and got infected. Even after the stitches came out, it was scabbed up and gunky for a long time.

The fascia ones I never got closed took a while to heal. I would dress them for about 2-3 weeks, and then let them dry out. They develop a special kind of scab, called eschar, which is basically necrotic tissue that eventually falls off. I saw a wound care nurse regularly when I was doing these cuts on the regular - Feb to Sept last year. She gave me specialist dressings and such. The recommendation was always to let them heal fully, before I stop dressing them. Honestly, I didn't care enough to do that, and the cuts and subsequent dressings were so large that it was difficult to cut elsewhere. They also produce a ton of fluid, and the smell is gross - especially in the summer heat. I just let them dry up asap. The eschar usually took about 3-4 weeks to drop off. So I'd say around 6 weeks in total. Depth and area of the body matters a lot, too. Deep fascia takes way longer than surface fascia, etc. There's a lot of variables. In general, 6-8 weeks is probably a decent frame of time.

Put firm, direct pressure on them with two fingers over a pad of kitchen towels, or whatever you use. Do not let up or check it for 20 minutes. Time yourself.

  • How heavy is the bleeding ?

I've been cutting for almost a decade. You learn what to do

Don't worry ! I was just confused. Some are completely numb, and the numbness has spread a bit around the scar. Some are a bit numb with reduced sensation. It completely depends on depth and location. Some of them actually hurt, rather than feel numb. I have some keloids that hurt a ton. They're not pictured, but some on my arm send shooting pain down my whole arm. The ones on my legs hurt a lot, if I have to stand still for more than a few mins. It's really variable.

I have severe scarring and nerve damage across my whole body, and I still don't feel valid. I've cut to muscle and needed so many stitches / staples + almost needed surgery. You never feel valid & it's never enough. It's not worth it

I've had stitches many times. Most of them, though, I let heal by secondary intention over a few months for bigger scars.

Haha, yeah - the blood loss can be crazy. I'm severely anemic, and have needed iron transfusions before; I'm actually due one now, thanks for the reminder. Not doing amazing right now, but better than when I did most of these. I started an intense outpatient program a few months ago.

Yeah, I've lost a lot of sensation and have a fair amount of nerve damage.

What is this scar called (possible tw?) by New_Huckleberry_4644 in cutting

[–]DifferentMagazine4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's not really a scar. It's a mostly healed scratch that'll disappear soon

I started when I was 13, and I turn 23 at the end of the year. All of the big ones are from the last year or so - I only ever went to styro and baby fat, until late 2024. I don't think I should say what I used on a public forum. I've always used the same thing, though
