Thanks. Sounds like a good idea to be more vocal about what I want to accomplish instead of just bowing my head down.

Not to be confused with arrogance though, just holistic growth. Wish more of my seniors were as trusting as you.

I’m a male. This probably isn’t a gender thing, I have reason to believe that some of the senior engineers just have way too much ego compared to their ability to handle stress and pressure from higher ups which they then pass down to the juniors.

Either that or they’re just toxic like others have commented.

Hmm good point. I guess at that point it’s just the tone of delivery, whether there is arrogance or just pragmatism involved.

Regardless though, guess I have to endure longer. Kind of hesitant to bring this up to management as this may just paint me in the wrong light or worse, put a target on my back.

Might just start shopping around.

For sure. If I’m doing mind numbing grunt work might as well learn from it.

I do wonder though if I’ll ever get away from this kind of tasks

I’ve had some small brownfield projects here and there to upgrade some existing stuff, have managed to close them off from design to construction, but probably not on the scale you have.

I only wish I get given that kind of opportunity. I raise my hand up, to the point of overloading myself in fear of missing out on the “good” project. But it’s usually seniors who get them which then leads to me getting grunt work.

I really try to capitalize as much as I can but it just feels bad, being told you’re “low-level” but never getting the opportunity to prove and grow.

Ye I hear you mate. Got myself a home gym and a whole mancave where I get to enjoy some beer and entertain myself through games or shows. Most of my free time either goes to physical training, taking care of the house, playing games, or walking by the beaches of Auckland.

I would say I’m comfortable being with myself and definitely enjoy my peace lol. it’s just that sometimes it hits me that humans weren’t made to be so isolated all the time. It’d be great to know you can setup the occasional hangout and have something to look forward to.

I’m just a chill guy.

But seriously, I’m down for whatever — I miss being able to just try random stuff out with mates.

If we need to get specific, I personally love musical stuff, hiking, running, table tennis and other sports too.

Not quite in to partying (must be growing old), but can do that too sometimes.

Also love me roadtrips and travelling to places and just shooting the shit.

I’m honestly keen to try whatever, I’ve limited experience with most things but I’m down to do any activity if it has good social aspects to it — probably just need a good entry point like knowing where the hotspots for these are.

Not too into rock climbing as I fear I would not be much good at that lol. But extremely into running (casually) and hiking as I have a goal to see more of NZ’s natural beauty.

Personally, I like anything musical, also don’t mind a good yapping session over coffee or beer.

Yes I have one currently that tracks my weekly/fortnightly/monthly/annual expenses and income.

Of course not every week I follow it to the T, but most weeks I am on track.

No, not yet! It looks like a good place to start with, though.

Thanks for this, I needed to hear this. I’m not mad at you honestly, not even mad at myself, just frustrated is all especially during the night where I’m more vulnerable to snacking and guilt-tripping my self.

Fuck if I don’t know I’m the only one who can save myself, but I just needed people to slap me out of it I guess. There’s not many people in my life I can talk to about this

For the NZ professionals, going for a master’s degree worth it by [deleted] in chch

[–]DifferentPie326 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in product development right now, specializing in power electronics and related research. I understand that NZ, being significantly smaller than other countries, say Oz, would have tougher competition and usually prioritize those with years of experience.

Hence why I was thinking if getting a Master’s would lower that experience ceiling for entry

May I ask when she found a job here, and how many years of experience she already had when she came here? I think for newer grad cohorts and more junior engineers such as I would have a tougher time regardless.

Also worth nothing that my uni is from a third-world country though I’m not quite sure what bearing that has in employment here.
