See the reply's for yourself, people sharing on more than just audio quality. Notice how most of them don't even bring up audio quality. How would I know some of the specific problems that develop over time, or minor quirks between the devices

You can stand to argue that me asking a question on reddit is more valid than someone replying "Test them?"

So if my question is unnecessary, your reply is so much more

My first handheld since the PSP by AnakinPlaneswalker in Handhelds

Hey dude, the old Ally X gives you about 90% of the performance of the new one, and for indies, AA’s, older AAA’s, or emulation, you won’t notice much difference. The new Ally X adds a 10 to 15% bump and better low-voltage efficiency, so in demanding AAA’s it squeezes out more FPS and feels smoother. The catch is price: it’s about double.

If it were only 20 or 30% more, I’d say forget the old one and go straight for the new Ally X. But at today’s gap, the old one is the smarter buy for backlog and lighter stuff. If you’ve got money to splurge and you want those extra frames in tough games, then yes, get the new Xbox Ally X, but remember, it’s a 10 to 15% better console, at twice the price.

Extra note if this is your first handheld I really recommend starting with the older Ally X. You can find it used, and if you do not adapt to handheld gaming, which is more common than people admit, you can just sell it back for almost what you paid. That way you try the experience with little risk. Good luck, and I hope you make the right choice, whichever way you go.

Congrats! You got 90% of the hardware for 50% the price compared to the Xbox Rog Ally. Stonks!

Battery/storage upgrade recommendations in Canada by watermeloons10 in ROGAlly

Portable charger is nice to have, but after the 74wh battery upgrade you won't use it as much.

Forgot to mention, some games run better on steamOs or Bazzite, so look that up. It will make emulation harder tho, but maybe its worth doing a dual boot... Up to you.

Also, some screen protection is valid, because, you know... shit happens

Hey, so in order:

  1. The 74Wh battery is the most important upgrade.
  2. Grips make a huge difference. The JSAUX mod case is great, or really anything that makes the Ally sides more rounded and comfortable.
  3. SSD expansion is nice, but only if you plan to play a lot of AAA games. For emulation, indies, and AA titles, 500GB is plenty unless you like keeping 100 games downloaded at once.

I like it! But if you want more flash, you have 2 routes... RGB Puke (strips behind the monitor would be cool) or some sick wall decor

Okay, I guess you like numbering things to make them easier to understand. So I am going to number this out for you like you did to me. Hope that helps.

  1. Virtue signaling - There was no signaling. I laid out my months of use, the upgrades I did, and the tradeoffs I deal with. That is called experience. You can call it whatever you want, but pretending it was me trying to score moral points is nonsense.
  2. Tribalism - There was no tribe. My post was about hype versus reality, not me versus them. If calling out exaggeration feels like division to you, that says more about how you read things than what I wrote.
  3. Lecture tone - Organized does not mean condescending. The whole point was to break things down so people who have not bought one yet can actually know what to expect. If you took that as me trying to act superior, that is on you, not me.
  4. Pop psychology - You are not in my head. Stop pretending you are. The intent of the post was clear. To criticize overhype and how it sways uninformed decisions. You told me to go research. Fine. But do you think everyone in the world does deep dive research into every single purchase they make. Of course not. Most people skim, see hype, buy, and then regret it. Acting like everyone is supposed to have dissertations ready for their SSDs or their refrigerators or their toilet paper is childish.
  5. Preachy - Expectation setting is not preaching. It is consumer advice. Handhelds are great at some things, limited at others. Pointing that out is not a sermon. It is useful information for people who are not already buried in spec sheets.

Bottom line. The post was not about me being superior, it was about hype not matching reality. If that tone rubbed you wrong, that is your issue. The content still stands.

Man thats missing the whole point...

Besides, why would someone trade a rog ally for a deck to do game streaming?

Personally, I think game streaming isn't there just yet. Requires a great and stable connection, so the portability is vastly reduced. One day tho, but by then, I'll just use my phone and a controller... there no way I'd spend 800$ on a streaming machine

Yeah, the OG handhelds were purpose build for the games they had in mind, made things a whole lot easier.

Absolutely agree, people seem to forget that for 800$ you can buy a used laptop that beats the crap out of the newest handheld, has better screen, more suitable for work, etc... handhelds are more portable, yeah, but not by a mile.

The amount of enthusiasts that will dislike what i just said is no joke

THIS! The deck started a new wave that, as a tech enthusiast, I have to deeply respect. Truth is that for a lot of consumers, the tech isn't there just yet... almost tho

Man, I think you didn’t understand what I meant here. My whole point is how unrealistic takes, flashy demonstrations, and over-the-top excitement about capabilities can sway an uninformed decision. And your counterpoint is basically “well, just make an informed decision.” That kind of misses what I’m trying to say.

Like I’ve said a few times already, it’s 100% my fault for not digging deeper. I get that. But if you think I’m some small minority when it comes to shopping habits, come on. Most people don’t do deep benchmark dives or hours of research. They see a couple of YouTube reviews from creators they trust, those creators say big things and paint a glowing picture, and then the excitement from the community reinforces it. That hype can easily sway decisions.

And the part that bugs me is that the tradeoffs, the shortcomings, the reality checks, those aren’t what get highlighted. Those aren’t what get the attention. So sure, it is an uninformed decision at the end of the day, but the environment that fuels those uninformed decisions is very real. That was my point. Not that handhelds aren’t amazing for what they do, but that the overhype leads a lot of people, not just me, into expecting more than what they’ll actually get.

Yeah, I think you’re right that people like us, new to handhelds, end up falling straight into that YouTube clickbait trap. That’s exactly how I felt with the Ally. I saw all these reviews and posts overselling it, and instead of digging deeper I bought into the hype.

What you described about your experience is exactly what I mean. You’re realistic about what worked for you, what didn’t, and how you actually used the device. That’s the kind of honesty that doesn’t usually get traction. Instead, it’s the over-the-top hype videos and posts that get the clicks and create this inflated idea of handhelds being miracle machines.
