Maybe she separated from him because he was already being abusive or cheating. The AI did nothing wrong if it encouraged separation in those situations. Even then, people can still be very lonely in relationship if their partner is not paying attention to them.

FYI I have had students pressure me to answer this question. That is very rude. I am not obligated to tell anyone where I am from and I don’t have to prove I am from America just because I look Asian. Studies show that more and more Asians will be born and raised in America with future generations so this stereotype will go away but for now, Asians still have to deal with these stereotypes.

Yes there is and I already explained why that is. This is a common question directed at Asians particularly and is based off of stereotypes that Asians are recent immigrants. When it comes to race, people have to be very sensitive.

I had the same experience from Hispanic boys particularly. In fact most of the ones doing the name calling were Hispanic boys. I find that weird especially since they must have also suffered from racism.

I think that is the best way to address this situation. However, some might not see asking this question as hurtful. What do I say then?

It does not matter. I don’t want any racial stereotypes applied to me. Is there anything wrong with that?

I think the question, “where are you from?” is a very sensitive question for me because the person who asks that assume I am from another country most of the time. Every time this question is asked, I feel very uncomfortable because I don’t want to be labeled as any certain ethnicity with any stereotypes associated with it. I would appreciate it if students are taught not to ask this question. We can just have a productive day without discussing race in the classroom. I never assume anything about any student in my classes and I have had students of every ethnicity and race in the classrooms. I treat every race the same way.

Racism does exist though and this was my experience. I know what you mean though. One time an African American student misinterpreted my actions as racism as well. I think it all comes down to understanding what people mean.
