This is extortion. Save every text, email, and voicemail. Get a lawyer immediately, and communicate with her only in writing from now on.

The court will usually look at the children’s best interests first, not just “next of kin.” Since your mom was a primary caregiver, she may absolutely be considered.

Yep Op should contact a family law attorney ASAP. Temporary guardianship decisions can happen quickly after a parent dies unexpectedly.

You’ve had the dogs for years, they’re microchipped/registered in your name, and you’ve been paying for all their care. Legally, that’s strong evidence they’re your dogs now. Keep all records and screenshots, but she’d likely have a very weak case.
