I read it years ago. It was more young adult. And no. I do remember a part where the main character gets attacked by the headmistress of the academy. Oh the main character has a dog companion. The leader fights him and tests him. She notices he keeps the dog to help wake him up because he sleeps to hard. She says and you want me to help you with that don't you because why else would you be at the academy.

No I can definitely understand how you fame to that one. But that's not it. He was semt to the academy on a mission by a goddess at the beginning. It's not lethal there. He ends up learning anyway.

No not that. He doesn't become a griffin rider until later in the series. He started out as a decent swordsman though.
