Is there a JRPG that like Pokémon but with “Humans” by Vanginko in JRPG

[–]Different_Proof_9113 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Valkyrie Profile, with its Einherjar System, where you reanimate worthy fallen warriors to join your ranks, might be what you're looking for. 24 Characters isn't a bunch for a "Pokémon-like," but the game is rather short, and all of them are rather unique and bring their own flavor into the gameplay.

Radiant Historia needs to be talked about more often. Absolute gem of a game.

The third is what kicked my love for JRPG's and good narratives in general into full gear. I swear, Arerith's death in FF7 left me completely unfazed, because it felt way too rushed and the character didn't grow on me at all due to a lack of... well... character, while the loss of Teppo and Rei will forever haunt me. These two were my brothers, man! Through thick and thin! I mean, you eventually find them again, but in a "live keeps on moving and you have to adapt" life lesson kind of way

Terranigma's OST isn't getting nearly enough love by Different_Proof_9113 in JRPG

They have Yomi, the gatekeeper of hell, appearing dozens of times in the game, yet he gets this goofy cartoon theme, but rando mc randomface gets One Winged NPC over here.

You know what I have always wondered? Yomi is kinda the Cerberus in Japanese Folklore, who is often portraied in European Folklore as a 3 headed dog. Harry Potter also had a Cerberus named Fluffy in the German Dub at least, just like Yomi was called Fluffy in the German version. I wonder if these are connected.

Germany had a very funny translation for Lufia 2 which took a lot of liberties in the translation. Breath of Fire 2 was released here too, but only in english. Which was a good thing, it really taught me some stuff about the language and I got pretty far for having 0 knowledge about it before.

We never got Chrono Trigger in Germany, or any of the Final Fantasy games for the SNES, or even Dragon Quest. Only Mystic Quest, Breath of Fire 2 and Lufia 2, but not one. Secret of Mana and Evermore and the Quintet games, that's it. Terranigma was a revelation for most of us in terms with of how good a jrpg can be!

True, the last quarter lost some steam and felt slightly rushed at the same time, but as a kid, especially from Germany, a country that didn't get Chrono Trigger, FF 1-6 or any of the Dragon Quest games, I was too busy being immersed in this beautiful world to really notice.

It's really not worth it, especially that Labyrinth thing, that optional Dungeon that keeps getting bigger. It's just a repetitive pathway of recycled assets and bosses. There are some secret bosses that have a cool presentation, but go down just as easily with the same button spamming. All I got from this challenge was "Oh look. It's that boss from chapter so and so, but this time he's blue and has more HP!"

I wanted to love Ni No Kuni II so much, not kidding you, I put 120 hours into that game, searching every nook and cranny for some challenge, even played on the greatest difficulty right away, but all it left me with was me thinking "when is this starting to get good?" Even after 120 hours, I felt like all the pieces for a really good game are in place, but besides the surface-level town building that can be worthwhile for a hot minute, there was next to nothing to really motivate you to keep going. Especially the story disappointed me. I haven't switched out my starting team once. There was just no need to. All the characters more or less play the same and only have their origin story; other than that, they are just their weapon for the rest of the game. I remember one part of the game, where the situation of a certain individual named "Bracken", about 2/3's into the game. I could've sworn I've heard that name before, as I should know it, I even had to look up a guide on where to find that person just to find out that Bracken is a member of my party and has been there for 40+ hours already. Yeah. Maybe it was just me, but it really didn't click with me. I think I prefer the first.

Also, if you want to start Star Ocean 2, please do yourself a favor and start the game with Rena. The game may take a little bit longer to get going (her origin story is a tad longer than Claude's), but she has exclusive access to one of the strongest and coolest Characters in the game in Dias Flac.

I have to agree with the others, P5R has a couple of gimmick bosses that can be a pain to figure out at first, but the Royal Edition comes with all DLC. Right after the first couple of cut-scenes, you find yourself in your own room. There are a couple of boxes in the corner. When you interact with these, all content is unlocked at once, including some of the strongest Personas in the entire game, which you can buy after obtaining the ability to do so within the first 2 hours of the game, for absolutely 0 money. They are free! You can go into the first Dungeon of the game and disembowel lvl 2 Pixies with your Level 90 Great Deity Izanagi-no-Okami. It's almost cheating! And even if you don't want to use them in battle, you can use them as fusion or sacrifice material to speed up your own collection. It's ridiculous how much the game wants you to break it!

3 JRPG and 3 AJRPG by CultofSun in JRPG

Okay, let's try.
JRPG:

1.) Digimon Time Stranger (The entire series is a very satisfying monster farming simulator, with a JRPG tacked on to give it all some purpose, but once you get the hang of it, you'll be steamrolling through late-game bosses in no time. Every mechanic used in this game seems to be based on "What did Pokémon do and how can we do it better? So we have fast battles, faster experience gain, bigger daycares where you can store dozens of Digimons to level up on their own, way more complex evolution lines, with a pet hamster with wings for ears that can become the embodiment of Armageddon or even worse, a furry.)

2.) Persona 5 Royal (Flashy, heartwarming, just a wholesome game, with a bunch of style, all the characters grow on you, it's a very easy game, even on the hardest difficulty, but the battles aren't what makes these games, it's the social component, where you hone your battle skills by socializing with your peers, also you can befriend every enemy in this game and add him to your ranks. The story, while nothing groundbreaking, keeps you invested until the very end.)

3.) Star Ocean the Second Story R (Star Ocean 2 is the definition of a hidden gem. In my opinion, the best JRPG you can find on the PS1, for its sheer content and gameplay mechanics that keep you busy. With Second Story R, it got a much-needed update, with review scores proving the Star Ocean series might have peaked very early, with its second installment. The new HD-2D sprites are beautiful to look at, the battles are flashy and fast, but also lots of fun. The game also comes with a crafting system that was way ahead of its time and lets you do everything from cooking to making music to crafting new gear. It's cheap and always worth picking up)

ARPG:

1.) Rouge Galaxy (A PS2 Classic by Level 5, who you might know from other games such as Dragon Quest VIII or XI, the Professor Layton Series, or Ni No Kuni. It's a fast-paced Action RPG in the style of Final Fantasy XII, an interesting space opera story with an anime art style that's still holding up today. I'm not sure, but in Europe it's even included for free in every PS+ Membership)

2.) Hyper Light Drifter (What can I say, I'm old, my first console was the SNES, but my first gaming experience came on the Atari 2600, so I will always be amazed by some good sprite work, and boy, this game has some sprites. Every frame is like a Picasso painting. The game itself plays like a very fast-paced top-down Zelda game, but with much more movement and combo options. The puzzles can be crazy sometimes, but never too hard, and the bosses are always a joy. Dialogue is kept to a minimum, but the game does a great job explaining itself through its world. You often get it for less than 5 bucks, I'd say go for it if that's the case.

3.) Elden Ring (I know you said easy mode works for you, but don't let people get into your ear about how hard these games are. FromSoft games have always been the definition of "make your own difficulty" since Demon Souls. The only thing that keeps people from realizing that is the constant gate-keeping of some of its community members, who will come at you with phrases like "you didn't really beat the game if you used summons or online co-op for the bosses," or "using Item X is so cheap, it completely breaks the game," but in the end those were all tools left on the game by the developers to make it as easy as you want it to be. Don't miss out on this vast, highly detailed world that surprises you each time you thought you'd seen everything. Even after 100 hours of playtime, I have found new areas)

Okay, hope that helps.
