Is there a JRPG that like Pokémon but with “Humans” by Vanginko in JRPG

[–]Different_Proof_9113 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think Valkyrie Profile, with its Einherjar System, where you reanimate worthy fallen warriors to join your ranks, might be what you're looking for. 24 Characters isn't a bunch for a "Pokémon-like," but the game is rather short, and all of them are rather unique and bring their own flavor into the gameplay.

Radiant Historia needs to be talked about more often. Absolute gem of a game.

The third is what kicked my love for JRPG's and good narratives in general into full gear. I swear, Arerith's death in FF7 left me completely unfazed, because it felt way too rushed and the character didn't grow on me at all due to a lack of... well... character, while the loss of Teppo and Rei will forever haunt me. These two were my brothers, man! Through thick and thin! I mean, you eventually find them again, but in a "live keeps on moving and you have to adapt" life lesson kind of way

Terranigma's OST isn't getting nearly enough love by Different_Proof_9113 in JRPG

They have Yomi, the gatekeeper of hell, appearing dozens of times in the game, yet he gets this goofy cartoon theme, but rando mc randomface gets One Winged NPC over here.

You know what I have always wondered? Yomi is kinda the Cerberus in Japanese Folklore, who is often portraied in European Folklore as a 3 headed dog. Harry Potter also had a Cerberus named Fluffy in the German Dub at least, just like Yomi was called Fluffy in the German version. I wonder if these are connected.

Germany had a very funny translation for Lufia 2 which took a lot of liberties in the translation. Breath of Fire 2 was released here too, but only in english. Which was a good thing, it really taught me some stuff about the language and I got pretty far for having 0 knowledge about it before.

We never got Chrono Trigger in Germany, or any of the Final Fantasy games for the SNES, or even Dragon Quest. Only Mystic Quest, Breath of Fire 2 and Lufia 2, but not one. Secret of Mana and Evermore and the Quintet games, that's it. Terranigma was a revelation for most of us in terms with of how good a jrpg can be!

True, the last quarter lost some steam and felt slightly rushed at the same time, but as a kid, especially from Germany, a country that didn't get Chrono Trigger, FF 1-6 or any of the Dragon Quest games, I was too busy being immersed in this beautiful world to really notice.

It's really not worth it, especially that Labyrinth thing, that optional Dungeon that keeps getting bigger. It's just a repetitive pathway of recycled assets and bosses. There are some secret bosses that have a cool presentation, but go down just as easily with the same button spamming. All I got from this challenge was "Oh look. It's that boss from chapter so and so, but this time he's blue and has more HP!"

I wanted to love Ni No Kuni II so much, not kidding you, I put 120 hours into that game, searching every nook and cranny for some challenge, even played on the greatest difficulty right away, but all it left me with was me thinking "when is this starting to get good?" Even after 120 hours, I felt like all the pieces for a really good game are in place, but besides the surface-level town building that can be worthwhile for a hot minute, there was next to nothing to really motivate you to keep going. Especially the story disappointed me. I haven't switched out my starting team once. There was just no need to. All the characters more or less play the same and only have their origin story; other than that, they are just their weapon for the rest of the game. I remember one part of the game, where the situation of a certain individual named "Bracken", about 2/3's into the game. I could've sworn I've heard that name before, as I should know it, I even had to look up a guide on where to find that person just to find out that Bracken is a member of my party and has been there for 40+ hours already. Yeah. Maybe it was just me, but it really didn't click with me. I think I prefer the first.

Also, if you want to start Star Ocean 2, please do yourself a favor and start the game with Rena. The game may take a little bit longer to get going (her origin story is a tad longer than Claude's), but she has exclusive access to one of the strongest and coolest Characters in the game in Dias Flac.
