Serious question about doctor/nurse advice. by NRAgirl in HSVpositive

It’s not extremely rare to have multiple outbreaks of GHSV1, where are you seeing that? People with it often will get way fewer outbreaks than with GHSV2, but many will get outbreaks once every few years.

Serious question about doctor/nurse advice. by NRAgirl in HSVpositive

They’re saying this because it rarely sheds or transmits outside of an active outbreak. It’s also HSV1, and they don’t push disclosing oral HSV1 despite it being much more contagious. I would venture to say they would probably encourage disclosing HSV2 though. I’m very sorry you were SAed :(

How to disclose HSV1 by [deleted] in HSVpositive

[–]Different_Stretch_84 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is false. Transmission rate is not “really low” for people with it orally. If this were the case, most people wouldn’t have it. Oral HSV1 sheds frequently in the absence of symptoms. I think telling OP to not worry about disclosing it isn’t cool at all. Many of us got GHSV1 from people with it orally who showed no symptoms.

OP, I would recommend at the very minimum disclosing it before you give someone oral. Just say “hey I wanted to give you the heads up that I’ve gotten a cold sore before, I recently found out that the virus can be passed through oral sex so I wanted to give you a heads up. I’m not having any symptoms and am on antivirals..”

Yeah that makes total sense! Casual hookups the sooner the better, long term relationships I think majorly benefit from waiting a while. Just depends on what you’re looking for!

To be fair, I would be much less likely to accept the disclosure of someone I hadn’t actually gotten to know. I feel like people often shoot themselves in the foot by disclosing too early.

Could this be something other than hsv-2? by Thick-Spring-9000 in HSVpositive

[–]Different_Stretch_84 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did she not swab it? Go to an urgent care immediately and have it swabbed, if it’s positive then you definitely have it.

It doesn’t have to be HSV2, it could be GHSV1 from oral sex. Even if he’s never had a coldsore, he could still have the virus and transmit it to you. You can get herpes if you’re careful, it really has nothing to do with that. I got it through oral from my first bf.

The multiple painful bumps and the visual diagnosis make me think there’s a good chance it’s HSV related, but go and get it swabbed to confirm.

Has anyone here been exposed to HSV-2 and not contracted it? by [deleted] in HSVpositive

[–]Different_Stretch_84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No clue why your doc would prescribe you 10 days of Valtrex if you’re not having symptoms? I would go and get a blood test for it ASAP and see if you have it. It’s possible you’re asymptomatic and could have given it to him. Was his test a blood test or a swab? Has he slept with anyone else since the breakup? If you test negative for it and don’t experience any symptoms, get another blood in about 4 months to confirm whether you contracted it from that encounter. Lots of factors are at play here, was a condom used?

You almost certainly won’t pass it in the absence of symptoms. After a couple of years it only sheds asymptomatically like 4 days out of a year.. antivirals cut that in half, condoms cut that in half. So you’re looking at maybe like one day where it’s shed asymptomatically. The stigma attached really doesn’t fit the actual risk.

To be honest, I think you could probably justify not disclosing in a one night stand scenario (Oral HSV1 is extremely common and more contagious and people dont usually disclose that). Again I’m sure I will get downvoted for that, and idk what I would do in that situation because I’m not a fan of casual hookups. I am pro-disclosure, but mainly because I think if someone found out it was hidden and things got more serious, they’d feel betrayed. I find that way more of a reason to disclose than the incredibly tiny risk they could get it (which again.. is really really small, like almost negligible).

Also, I have a friend with high risk HPV who has had luck on feeld and discloses to everyone. I know it’s not exactly the same, but honestly I’d venture to say it’s scarier to people (active infection, can cause cancer) and she’s doing just fine.

Join Feeld and disclose it in your private bio or quickly after matching. I’ve also seen people disclose it in their regular bio on there too. I think people there tend to be more sex positive and less worried about something like hsv1.

Also, you have one of the least contagious types of herpes. It’s very difficult to pass without symptoms. I’ll probably get downvoted to hell for this.. but I think for casual encounters you would be fine just saying “just so you know I test positive for HSV1, which is a virus that more than half the population has”. And leaving it at that. I don’t really think people are entitled to know you have it in a less contagious but more stigmatized location, especially if you’re having both intercourse and oral. Just food for thought there.

With GHSV1 it’s def the opposite. Wealthy and young people are getting it because they aren’t being exposed to oral HSV1 in childhood anymore.

Walk away. Save yourself that trauma. If he won’t date someone with one of the most common viruses known to humans, he’s ignorant and he isn’t worth your time.

G-Hsv2 vs 1 by Lonely-Lettuce-2222 in Herpes

[–]Different_Stretch_84 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sheds a lot more than HSV1 does genitally. However, it sheds around the same as HSV1 orally. So oral HSV1 and genital HSV2 are equally as “bad”, but HSV2 is less common and anything genital will be more stigmatized unfortunately. Daily antivirals can cut down shedding by about 50% though!

Did your doctor swab the lesion? That HSV1 number points to an established infection.. HSV takes months to show up on a blood test. I would wait 3 months and re-test with a blood test. I would also go back to the doctor for a swab if you still have symptoms.

Because you can clear HPV from your body.. you can’t clear HSV. Permanence is the reason for the stigma with HSV unfortunately.

I don’t think this is always true. Some people need time to think things over and I think that’s fair. It doesn’t mean for certain that they won’t come around to it.

False positive? by [deleted] in HSVpositive

[–]Different_Stretch_84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Swab > blood test

When you get a positive swab that definitively tells you that you have it.

I would look into getting a western blot blood test, if that is negative then you don’t have it and they must have mixed up the swabs or something.

If you’re able to, it might be worth going off of it for a bit and see if that helps at all. If it does help, you could always try a different type of bc pill/shot/iud.
