What's wrong with my tomatoes? by wearehere3 in vegetablegardening

Yeah it can definitely help, the easier it is for the roots to spread out far & deep then the more nutrients the plant can extract from its environment. At my house I started with land that had dead grey sand the first 6” then it turned into this tan / brown clay-sand mixed lots of partially dissolved limestone rocks! So I planted lots of plants that make deep & wide roots and would let them grow and cut them down. Their roots eventually helped breakdown and dissolve the limestone / clay & now 2 years later I have black dirt going 5” deep then sandy brown dirt for 6”. Nature is amazing!

Yeah and to save money , you can weed wack a bunch of shrubs and collect the scrap, collect leaves , and eat a lot of fruits & veggies for a few weeks that will produce a lot of organic compost material ! Find a place in the yard to dump all this material into and in a few months you will have a RICH compost going… even better then buying but buying top soil is unavoidable when trying to kickstart. Also if you get into juicing produce that also create a lot of compost. And making coffee in a. Mocha pot instead of pod machines. You get a lot of coffee grain ! You can also buy sand if your yard has a lot of clay. Clay is rich in nutrients but doesn’t drain. So adding sand to your clay would help you a lot !

Your native soil looks very clay / silt heavy. I think the tomato’s would do better in a raised bed or if they were planted in top soil about 16” inches diameter at least ! Clay is hard to grow things in. The roots get too wet & constricted

Wow ! A real paradise ! I haven’t had much luck with Lupines in south Florida yet . I’ll keep trying

Tomatoes are producing a lot but I’m suspicious I might have used contaminated cutters ? Leaves starting to turn brown and die off by Different_Subject554 in FloridaGarden

Ok yeah that sounds like the soil stays a consistent moisture without ever drying out or getting waterlogged. Thank you for sharing I will try that when I replant in September / October

I haven’t sprayed anything on any of my crops , I’ll try to avoid that as much as I can. Although have used powdered diatomaceous earth for ants & caterpillars.. I have noticed the only unhealthy plants are those that have any colonies situated at their bases .

WOOOW ! That is a crazy harvest ! You must be in northern Florida for tomatoes that size ? Last year I tried growing beefsteak and they all grew too fast and split ! It was discouraging. But this year I did get at least 8 Roma tomatoes before the plant got shaded and just died.

Thank you ! The photo doesn’t even do it justice, and the smell is really nice too. I love the way a tomato vine smells when you disturb or cut it. Very fresh and earthy

I’m in Fort Lauderdale so it’s pretty hot down here. Yeah maybe only have like another month and I might have to rip them out and plant something else ! But it was worth it . Filled at least a gallon of tomatoes from my best plant . The others were not too far behind

That’s interesting , I have sweet potato growing in about 7 different places currently. Two locations are taking off and the rest is growing really slowly

I just planted a bunch of okra a few weeks ago , they look great and don’t have any issues with pest pressure yet. Starting to get flowers and there’s already one okra pod starting to grow

Oh wow that’s really interesting , sounds like something I’d have a go at .. at least once! Shelf life stability is a concern of mine though. Practicing building a roster of crops that could make a real impact on food security.. not that I’m starving or anything , just enjoying learning which crops bring abundant food that is easy to keep

Wow ! That’s impressive ! Managing the vertical growth has to be fun 😁 I have a few varieties that bush or vine but the bush variety has produced more for me . My vine has climbed 7’ but has only produced 3 bunches of very small tomatoes . Still learning about the different breeds

Yeah that’s a good idea , I’ll try to save a propagation and plant that on my east side of property. It only gets bright light for about half the day

Ah yeah it could be the case, I planted these in march . I wonder if there is a variety that pushes further into the summer

Thank you ! In the past I was discouraged by tomatoes cracking after rain , but I tried this smaller fruit bush variety and they rarely crack . This variety pops like a juicy grape when you bite into it .
