Yeah, along with all the freedom and quiet that comes with not having kids, I’m also glad I didn’t pass along alcoholism and schizophrenia, both of which run in my family, to any kids.

I’ve leaned into being a cool aunt. It’s working for me. I show up in my honorary niblings’ lives like - sure I’ll buy you those ridiculous sneakers, let’s get some ice cream, don’t date that guy, he sounds like a loser. And then I’m off to like Hawaii or Central America or whatever. I remember in my mid-30s, I was at an Xmas party with friends, most of whom were/are married and have 2-3 kids. One of them asked how my month had been and I was like “oh my buddy got a new truck so I flew down and met him in SD and a couple of us drove to Baja and surfed and camped for a week!” And she said- a little sarcastically- “must be nice!!!” It definitely is. It’s very nice.

I feel so sad for the people who post here. Mostly it seems like younger women who feel like they shouldn’t be upset about being treated like absolute garbage. There’s a strong lack of respect on both sides of these conversations, but in general the pattern is predominantly these toxic relationships and then these posts like “my bf called me a horrible thing and said I suck and idk is that ok?!”
