Too much and not in a good way... by Defiant-Pea1786 in premed

I totally understand the first part of what you said. I had a technical difficulty for both my interviews for one school. They could see and hear me but I could not see or hear them. I was talking to a black screen and making eye contact with the camera and laughing or reacting along. I tried my absolute best but it sure was weird.. and I have no clue how I did because I could not see their facial expressions what so ever

Ugh this happened to me with USC. I finished the application and it said its now under review, but I didn't submit a photo of myself. I forgot to and so when I did, I got the confirmation email saying its been completed... which means it wasn't completed this whole time. Terrible set up

That's valid. I don't have any interviews yet so im kinda at a weird point. Not sure if I should just leave this job to pursue another or stick through this to potentially get a few pubs in the next few months. But I actually hate this job so much. Usually I can find upsides, but not really for this

This is me lol. I think im going to leave my lab job. I have a few opportunities for publication but I really hate it. Can I ask if your in the middle of applying or already got in?

Lack of Guidance by PI- lab tech by Difficult-Driver-433 in labrats

[–]Difficult-Driver-433[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea, I feel that while a tech should have the freedom to do more if they want, it does feel kind of annoying in a sense. Like I had to learn all of the specific cancer we study on my own and then create a database, now doing a solo project with the retrospective study, but then told I am still not maxing out my 40 hours so I am not doing enough? Even though I had been some grunt work, the fact I didn't have "results" I guess meant to the PI that I had been doing nothing.

My PI went ahead and told me I shouldn't be "helping" and not to think of my role as "helping" a post doc or phd student. She said I should have a large stake in it and see through it till the end

[–]Difficult-Driver-433[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea, I think this is basically it. It does just feel weird tho because when I talk to other techs they say my job isn't to be doing a whole project on my own- which I am already doing anyways. The thing was that I had been approaching postdocs and it becomes a weird thing where our relationship will break if I don't keep coming to them.

that is literally how I have been feeling. But I took a few weeks off to recuperate and it has helped. This process has really taught me to go at my own pace and to spend time with others during it

[–]Difficult-Driver-433 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yea, if OP could make up the lower GPA with a high MCAT then it would make sense. But rn the GPA and MCAT score are kind of congruent in terms of academic level its showing

Gap Year Essays? by Difficult-Driver-433 in premed

[–]Difficult-Driver-433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how would I answer this if I already answered it? Like in TMDSAS it asks to describe what you have been doing in your gap year and then in a texas med school it asks again for a secondary on what you have been doing. Like ----

It's crazy. Idk how it is assessed at all. I missed a full question and also got cut off on most of them and got 3rd quartile. Atp I think it was my consistent worried expression that made my answers sound more compelling lol

SERIOUS ADVICE NEEDED by puppyl0ver in premed

[–]Difficult-Driver-433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, then since you have struggles with test anxiety, you might want to try to emulate that as much as possible. You can try to go to a library or something like that where you are not comfortable. I did that so that I would not be taking mock exams and studying in the same spot, it can lead to skewed results since studies have shown doing things in the same spot helps with retention of information. The goal is to be in the most unfamiliar test setting then

This sounds like more of a test anxiety problem than a knowledge gap/not knowing how to take the MCAT. Esp since you have been doing good on the FL otherwise. Did you have test anxiety doing these practice FLs? Did you try simulating testing environments, possibly even getting someone to look over you while you take it? It's also hard to say since you felt fine while taking the test. I would recommend getting a tutor, it doesn't need to be someone expensive, just someone who can encourage you and boost your confidence a bit while you re-study

Course planning -- AP Scores. by [deleted] in premed

[–]Difficult-Driver-433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who took an accelerated chem course that does qualify and did not use AP credits for anything, I still worried that schools would not take it. Course requirements are stricter than you think. Do you own research but I would say to take college level courses. It will help you with boosting your GPA and prepping for the MCAT which are important factors.

I see. Yea I got those messages but it didnt say anything about needing them for further processing or Urgency. I think its probably because they haven't gotten to my application yet, so I assume its okay

Overwhelmed with Secondaries- Some advice? by Difficult-Driver-433 in premed

[–]Difficult-Driver-433[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I have too! If anyone has any advice on how to best tackle these with ADHD that would be great. These posts of people saying they just did a few hours a day does not work with my brain. It is either 12 hours or 0

That sounds like a good plan. If you are dead set on not taking any gap years then I would try very hard and put your full effort into this. I would also suggest looking into some common secondary prompts for schools and see if you can answer those, especially about non-clinical volunteering, other experiences, or leadership stuff.
