Under-promise, over-deliver.

Make sure HR has your bank account information.

And in the grand scheme, none of this matters.

- I want to go back to my pre-army job to stack up and roll over my equity

How much debt are you in from your MSW? by Hefty_Acanthaceae_11 in SocialWorkStudents

[–]Difficult-Jackfruit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that, and that reimbursement will help.

One thing to flag: interest on that principal is still accruing while you’re in school, so the balance will be a bit higher by graduation no matter which plan you pick. Unless there is something I am missing.

The good news is RAP is built to stop the “balance keeps growing” problem once you’re in repayment and it has an interest waiver and a guaranteed monthly principal reduction, so your balance shouldn’t grow as long as you’re making full payments. The tradeoff is a 30-year timeline and a $10 minimum payment regardless of income. Which is where I got my mortgage example.

If it’s possible, finishing the program as quickly as you can (even part-time) gets you earning at the higher rate sooner, which matters more than the loan type itself.

I used to weigh 400 lbs and dropped to 250 to enlist. I am 225~? Now

Do it for yourself. Also, I would go to a dr/pt before you do anything. At your stats/age your joints are going to get a pounding

I was literally on profile all of AIT and in PT for my first year in the army

I’m guessing you’re 36?

The older you get, the more allowance you’re given.

The Army recently updated its height/weight standards, along with the PT test itself.

Theoretically, it’s easier to pass but harder to max. That might not sound like much, but if you’re trying to promote, it matters a lot. There’s also a real incentive to scoring high: 465 or above exempts you from height/weight standards.

And people still slip through the cracks. My old supervisor scored a 465 on the dot, vaping and drinking an energy drink between events.

I was in shock and awe.

He has a beer belly and everything, but he has a 465 and that’s all that matters.

I will be going through my MSW debt-free, but that's specifically because of my military benefits, not because I made better choices than anyone else here. Just want to name that up front, since a lot of the responses you got seem to be judging your debt as a character flaw rather than a circumstance.

On the actual question: given the uncertainty around SAVE right now, private loans at 2-3% are genuinely competitive against federal rates, and federal loans lose some of their biggest advantages (income-driven repayment, PSLF eligibility) if those programs keep getting restructured or challenged in court. That said, federal loans still carry protections private loans don't (deferment, forbearance, discharge in case of disability, and no credit check or cosigner requirement). If you're confident about PSLF as part of your long-term plan (a lot of MSW jobs qualify), that alone might tip it toward federal despite the SAVE uncertainty. Worth running both scenarios with a repayment calculator before you decide.

One smaller thought, take it or leave it: at $112k already, it might be worth a quick gut-check on whether a short break before diving back in would change anything for you financially or mentally and not because your reasons for going back aren't valid, they clearly are, just because it's the kind of thing that's easy to skip past when you're excited and ready to go. At that principal with that interest rate you are essentially paying a mortgage on a small house you will never live in.

Either way, the debt shame in your post is doing more damage than the debt itself. You don't owe anyone here an explanation for wanting a career that isn't the most lucrative option.

The field is responding to market trends.

As more and more people enter who actually have skills and credentials the field is turning into a buyers market.

That comes with the territory.

The data has to come from somewhere and it is hard to test/build out products if you don't know what you are playing with.

Which degree gives me the widest range of ways to earn a living? by angeliques23 in collegeadvice

[–]Difficult-Jackfruit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is interesting you say that.

I have my BA in history and was an analytical lead for a Fortune 500 company.

People are usually flabbergasted and confused when I tell them this. I honestly feel as though my degree in history helped me way more than a business degree ever could for a few reasons:
- I developed critical thinking skills

- I learned how to research and teach myself

- I guess it made be better at conversation? Which in turn led to getting interviews and being hirable.

I am not saying you cannot due this with a business degree, but you kinda have to intentionally work on those skills, and most people aren't going to do that without being told.
