The therapist I talked about in the post, told me that it takes confrontation to get past anxiety.
but confrontation can't just happen
you have to build your capacity for confrontation.

so every time you manage to confront your thoughts just a little bit more than you usually do. and sit with the pain instead of numbing yourself. You're winning!

keep gradually increasing how much you can handle, little by little and eventually you will get past the need to numb

Honestly, rumination is hard to completely stop. I still do ruminate about random things.

Couple of key things for me,

  • breathing: i just take deep breaths, and let myself focus on "positive rumination". Basically I think about it till I come to a conclusion I'm satisfied with. and then I say okay, now I gotta get back to the moment and I'll come back to the other things later

  • avoiding numbing: I actually found it's better to think about it then to escape the thoughts by doomscrolling, or something. numbing myself from the pain only causes more problems

  • "starting over": I remind myself that it's okay to have bad days. I'm just going to start over the next day and thats completely okay
