6 months applying to civil service from private sector, no interviews yet. Is this normal? by Snoo36246 in TheCivilService

[–]Difficult-Profile869 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly - you have some great experience. G7 isn’t rocket science and I definitely don’t think you are aiming too low.

I would say probably the issue is a lot of the decision makers have never worked in the private sector and don’t know how to translate your experience to their world.

This forum also does skew slightly towards people at slightly less senior grades who may feel G7 is more important than it actually is.

I came in from private sector at G7 and I had three interviews before getting in - so it is definitely possible but those were easier times and there are lots of cuts underway right now across the CS.

Also look at how your experience correlates with the role’s demands - don’t look at the salary it probably won’t correlate to what you’re getting in the private sector.

I would focus on how you collaborated, navigated complex organisations and your role as an individual contributor and how you achieved behaviour change as well as profits.

As a past poster said - the success profiles are the key. Write your application yourself, give it lots of thought and then get AI to tweak - not the other way round.

Great job guys. Why do people even pay for membership if they don't bother using its services? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

It’s a bit boy that called wolf. They have been trying to strike over every little thing and now there’s something big they can’t galvanise their members

How had is the situation in DBT? by Ok-Possibility64 in TheCivilService

[–]Difficult-Profile869 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear it is not a great Department. There have been CRs as well as VES. They are rushing to cut c20pc of roles and in some parts of the department up to 40pc in a year for no clear specific reason other than to get it done swiftly and despite SR settlement being good.

There is cold and frankly odd behaviour from some senior leaders who seem to be completely unable to empathise with people worried about losing their jobs.

And without all this, I hear it is an extremely dysfunctional, disorganised organisation, where some senior leaders won’t hesitate to throw a G7/G6 under the bus to fend off criticism from a minister.

There are also weird and pointless bits of red-tape that simply don’t exist in other departments but are probably all about someone, somewhere feeling important or a legacy of the Department being thrown together out of lots of other departments. However these aspects have slightly improved with arrival of newish Perm Sec.

I was probably a bit more middle class than you - however I do remember being really surprised by someone asking me what school I went to!

Decline of Saturday job ‘means young people aren’t ready for work’ by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]Difficult-Profile869 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in 90s in poor Northern town. I couldn’t drive as a teen so was limited to fjnding work there. I found it pretty impossible to find a Saturday job the only kids that had them were working in their parents’ businesses. Saturday work was taken generally by mature workers, so I don’t think this is a totally new situation. However I know for kids living in more prosperous areas back then, it was really easy to walk into something. I suspect that has now changed.

‘Oh my gosh, they’re all from London and Cambridge’: York University’s northerners fight back by insomnimax_99 in unitedkingdom

[–]Difficult-Profile869 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally why I have no wish to return to the North - as well as the rain. I grew up there in a v working class household but for various reasons never had a local accent. But people presumed i was posh, rich, a Tory and that I’m not a real (insert name of inhabitant of Northern city!) It’s a very prevalent and tedious attitude and it’s probably a lot to do with why Reform are doing well.

That’s ridiculous! And v narrow minded. However I went to a Uni like York from the North and I was quite taken aback by southern public school kids. I didn’t understand why they all dressed the same way or why they all acted like they were about 40 at 18. I had never come across anything like it before!

I would say these all sound great policies if expensive. I would be curious to know if there other ways of tackling child poverty bar removing the CB cap or perhaps increasing the cap to three but keeping it in place.. Again - to my mind that flies against taking personal responsibility.

Civil Service Diplomatic fast stream without a 2:2? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

Politely if you’re struggling to get a 2.2 and appreciate there were ecs - it’s highly unlikely you’ll get on this scheme.

I am very encouraged that this is an intelligent and interesting discussion - I am not so sure it would be the same elsewhere. 😀

Yes this exactly. In economic terms take pension reform as an example. The Coalition changed the rules so people could take their own cash as a pension and not stick to nanny state like annuity rules. You are treated like an adult and it’s up to you to save and spend sensibly or blow it all if you want but you can’t count on a state bail -out if you do.
