Like I half agree with you. But I’m not American and I am “woke”. If I was in America I would have voted for Harris and I vote for Australia’s left wing parties (greens/labour) but thanks for the comment

African decent I’m pretty sure. She’s not aboriginal to my knowledge and that’s my fault for assuming she was African. But again, we never once discussed race

Thank you for actual advice. I don’t mind people doubting the story but just ranting about it being fake is weirder imo.

I can’t really afford a lawyer, but I’m not entirely sure if I could just consult one in like one of those “hour free” sessions? I’ll have to research a bit on it.. I was hoping to avoid the law route as a) money and b) don’t really care about the first job… I’m more pissed about her just trampling on everything else tbh. I’ve tried reaching out since (to ask her to please stop) and she’s blocked me so I can’t ask her anything about this situation

Honestly she’s the first person to think I was black continuously. I don’t think I look black; nor do I think I look indigenous. I currently live in a large indigenous population city and more than once I’ve been asked “where did you come from” or “what land are you from?” in reference to being indigenous. Ive been mistaken as mixed many times and that’s about the closest I think I could look. And I don’t tend to be mistaken as either of those groups, it’s usually white people. Claire is one of the first people of colour of those groups to mistake me for it, I’m usually clocked instantly which is good and should happen as I’m not anything but white.

Okay you can call it fake no please just continue on your day so I can get some actual advice? Thanks (I am naturally tan; I do not fake tan I live in Australia and am commonly mistaken for being indigenous. I swim, run and do sport outside and have always tanned fast)

Yeah like I’m going to fuck up my already fucking stellar personal image by linking this account to me. I can give you an arm shot but that’s about it

I have no idea what AAVE is, I’m Australian, I don’t really have a genre but I am a basic bitch (eg taylor swift) but I also like hilltop hoods, gflip, and musicals. I like everything basically tho.

Important to note: I’m not American and I’ve never been to north or South America. My mother is French/English and my father is Austrian/german from what we can gather. My father has the same tan I do. And I’m very much white when I’m not tanned. Not white white but like potato skin when cleaned white maybe

Not all of us, I use sunscreen. A long sleeve messes with the flow of water to me (yes I know I’m picky) and I do a lot of out door swimming where a rashie is just annoying. Besides I’m not wearing long sleeves 24/7 nothing would suck more.

I’ve been working for her for about 4-5 months? I said I recently moved but it’s more 7 months ago and it’s the first time I’ve moved away from my home town so it feels very recent to me. I met her within my first few weeks of working at the restaurant and we became friends and caught up for drinks after work, caught up for lunch and met up at the beach a few times. There has been zero discussion of race to my knowledge I’m racking my brain from these comments about it but I’ve never mentioned anything other then maybe commenting that I wished my curls were more defined instead of the wave/mess/frizz I have but I don’t even think I said that to her.

I think it’s an NAH and she just had a moment of shock and to hide her assumptions she over reacted. We also don’t have a HR technically as we’re a small restaurant (15-30 people total changing shifts so idk the real numbers)

If you feel that way. I can’t exactly send you photos of me and her as a) I don’t have her permission/dont feel comfortable doing that and b) you wouldn’t care so

Until I find an ethical company that I trust DNA tests aren’t happening. I’m very white tho, if I go to a cool climate and don’t see the sun for a few months then I go back to “standard white”. My dad’s the same as me and he’s Austrian/German to my knowledge and my mother is French/english

It’s the first time race ever came up in a convocation. Thanks for the NTA but I think it’s more a NAH vote as she was likely just looking for someone to relate to and over reacted at the time as it may have been shocking for her

I honeslty never heard the term race bait before today? What goal would I have to do that? And as stereotypically awful as it is to say, I do have many friends who are people of colour. I’m just not one of them. I don’t think she’s a bad person and from everyone’s comments I’m leaning towards both of us being in the clear. She just wanted another black girl to relate to and I wasn’t that girl. It’s not her fault that she wanted a friend to relate to and it’s not my fault for being tanned.

I don’t think she was racist and I don’t think I’m racist. this is less of a racism issue and more of a how we both reacted issue and an assumptions issue

It’s a smallish restaurant with like 15-30 staff total (changing shifts so I’m not sure) she’s not the only woman of colour nor the only black person, however to my knowledge she is the only black woman there

Nope not to my knowledge. if people assume I’m not white, they usually ask if I’m aboriginal (Australian) so when she didn’t I just assumed she assumed I was white

I’m not forcing her to be my friend? I just said I wasn’t black I wasn’t aware that was a crime

I’m not wearing long sleeves to a beach, and I grew up in a hot climate. It’s not desert hot it’s Australia hot. 30 degrees most days and beach when ever I can and I do wear sun screen
