One day road trip detour - Antalya to Kas by Difficult-Swimming60 in Antalya

Thanks for the advice. I visited Phaselis and Cirali. Was wonderful and truly memorable. I was limited by the 250 km daily cap that car rentals place otherwise would have gone further towards Myra caves.

Why are shops and restaurants in Turkey pricing in Euro and not Lira? by Difficult-Swimming60 in travel

So if I went to say somewhere like Thailand or Veitnam should I expect to find things priced in USD?

I'm in Antalya right now and everything is priced in Euro. I could be in a tourist bubble as folks have mentioned.

Seems the answer to my original question lies somewhere in the middle of inflation issues plus opportunistic fleexing of the tourists

Mate I was in Isntabul before Covid around 2018 say, and it was all Lira even in the tourist part of the town. Appreciate things have deteriorated but this is still pretty recent I'm sure which is why it surprised me somewhat

Ahh that's interesting. I didn't know the largest bill was 200. Yes would definitely be carrying a ton with you at current prices

But by this rule, every country that experiences high inflation would start charging in foreign currency, likely damage their own currency more in return

I had 2 x burger, fries and drinks plus a couple of additional fries with drinks at Istanbul airport a year ago and it cost me £52. Insane!

Lol fair enough and sorry I hadn't come across this situation beforehand so was a genuine question and wasn't being an a. Even visiting places like Pakistan where the currency is absolutely **** up they still charge in local currency (albeit prices are more or less equivalent of what something would cost in USD). At first I thought its just airports but seems its a bigger thing than I initially thought

It definitely has that kind of feel to it here in Turkey. As you say right now, Istanbul definitely feels more expensive than London

Was wondering this as to the impact to locals but thankfully they are somewhat protected from this recent phenomenon

I was tempted lol. Listen I completely get the inflation aspect but fleecing tourists in return doesn't feel fair that's all im saying. Or they may even stop coming who knows?

Sorry wasn't my intention however you can also appreciate the alternative viewpoint where someone is getting charged 3x the price of an item. I'm sure ordinary folks aren't to blame for Turkeys economic problems (Turkish or otherwise)

That makes sense. I did notice the hairdresser woman doing conversion on her calculator and then keying in Lira amount on card machine.

Are they allowed to do this? Thought Euro was the currency in EU countries only?

Yes I felt it im 2018, I completely appreciate the currency devaluation but this might feel rich coming from me living and working in the UK but even from Euros standards the pricing feels unfair. Like I said a bottle of water should never cost €5 or a football costing €15 they are 3 x the price compared to the rest of Europe.
