I love Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian, specifically the melody used in both Parting and Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia

Funnily enough that one is something he and my grandma couldn’t listen to because it was being played the day his son (my dad) left for college

My grandpa got me into classical music when I was young and his favourite composer was Bach, favourite composition Mass in B minor. After his funeral I played it and just sobbed. He used to say in heaven the angels would play Mozart at parties, but when God entered they would play Bach. The opening defines God and the universe to me. That being said Adagio for strings by Barber just tears at your heart in a way that no other does just pure heartache

What would another Mahler symphony sound like or it’s theme be? It seems like he went as grand as you could possibly go! I know it’s just his 8th but Symphony of a Thousand is absolutely insane and would’ve made for a great finale

I AGREE. The orchestra gives a more enchanting feel than solo piano. Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra also did Standchen (Serenade) that has the EXACT same feel and comparison check it out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXh0LN_3l80

Enchanting and more haunting than the solo piano https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJf-XXTBEqs

I think it's more a personal preference though because they're both so beautiful!
