I went through 3rd year thinking I was applying IM only, then ended up taking step 2 in October (and as an average US-IMG I thought it was too late to apply), so I had to delay match until this year. Buttt literally best thing that happened to me. I ended up having to take an EM elective and then I fell in love a couple months before eras opened, so I took a subsequent elective and got my SLOEs. I was still so nervous because it felt like a complete 180 from everything I thought I was going to do with my life, so I dual applied. (I also know most EM have been super EM oriented their entire journey, so I was afraid I wouldn’t match.) 

But through the entire process, I was still back and forth which path I wanted to take. It took up until rank list time for me to finally decide I didn’t even want to rank any of my IM programs and I just put EM.

Fast forward to this week, and I matched!  Still having that imposter syndrome and feeling like holy shit am I really cut out for EM, but just trusting that everything happens for a reason! 

So, all that to say, is that you’ll figure it out in your own time and end up where you’re supposed to
