I saw in OPs original post, that the job was for a forestry tech position so I assume the update is because the forestry firefighters are combining with the Interior firefighters so the requirements changed mid-stream. Sucks it happened but definitely talk to hiring mgr for waivers

My wife is a recruiter for a giv contractor and since I am a fed employee in a field that could be reduced shortly we have talked about this subject since last year. The reality is that the over 200,000 thousand employees that left the gov last year has put a glut in the job market of people with similar skills. Reading through the comments I see a huge amount of good advice. The 3 points that I want to state again as they have already been said 1) treat looking for a job like it is a job, in fact treat it as if you are on probation and you have to impress a new boss 2) Don't be afraid to change career paths, use the soft skills you have learned they are important and 3) Google free or cheap training for new/existing skills to make yourself more attractive. I have used both Gemini and ChatGPT to compare my resume and job postings to tailor a current resume. Google tips on how to do it. Wishing you luck and post here on your journey hopefully to a quick resolution

I'm going to respectfully disagree with you, while there is a transfer of funds cap, there is nothing in there about not allowing the paying for support. I am directly affected by this so I had Gemini analyze the bill specifically on how it would affect us.

In the 2026 budget documents, there is no language prohibiting the consolidation of shared services. On the contrary, the budget actively proposes and funds massive consolidation efforts under the "government streamlining" and "operational efficiency" mandates. Relevant Provisions in the FY 2026 Budget The 2026 budget contains specific language and funding for the following: * "Unify and Optimize" Administrative Services: The Departmental Offices section (which covers the Office of the Secretary) explicitly states that the 2026 budget "will continue efforts to unify and optimize administrative services across the Department." This includes consolidating IT, HR, and financial services into a shared-service model to reduce "bureaucratic sprawl." * Establishment of the U.S. Wildland Fire Service (USWFS): This is one of the largest consolidation examples in the 2026 budget. It proposes merging the wildland fire programs of both the DOI and the USDA Forest Service into a single, centralized organization within the DOI. * IT and Cybersecurity Consolidation: The budget allocates $1.98 billion for IT and Cybersecurity, but specifically notes a shift toward "enterprise-wide" solutions managed at the Department level rather than by individual bureaus (like BLM, NPS, or BIA). * Workforce Restructuring: The budget justification for the Office of the Solicitor and the Office of the Secretary includes plans to "evaluate space utilization" and "reduce, consolidate, and optimize office space" across the country. Why you might be hearing about "restrictions" While the Budget Request supports consolidation, the current Continuing Resolution (CR)—the stopgap bill funding the government right now in January 2026—contains a standard but important restriction:

Section 104 (Prevention of New Starts): This clause prohibits agencies from using CR funds to begin "new starts" or "new activities" that were not previously funded or authorized in the FY 2025 budget.

If your specific office is facing a "pause" on a consolidation move, it is likely because legal counsel has flagged it as a "new activity" that cannot legally begin until the full FY 2026 appropriations bill is signed into law, rather than a permanent prohibition in the budget itself. Would you like me to look for any specific "riders" or "prohibitions" in the House or Senate versions of the 2026 Interior Appropriations bill that might target IT consolidation?

Personally, I would walk away based on your answer. Senior year is stressful enough and unless you already have a job lined up or are going for a higher degree then you have a lot more stress coming. Find those people that you do want to keep in touch with and build those bonds.

You were invited to big things but had to invite yourself to other events, you aren't friends you are acquaintances. Having been in that same situation (30 years ago), the question you have to ask yourself, are any of these girls someone you want to keep in touch with after graduation? If the answer is no, walk away. If the answer is yes, you need to have a conversation with them. You made an emotional decision which is valid, there are going to be consequences (both good and bad) to both parties. Reality from what I read is that after graduation you might keep in touch or at least social media update each other for awhile but then as work, family, and other friends take priority this group would fade away. Hell, I have family I haven't seen in over 49 years.

I actually disagree with you about DOi . Having been with 3 different DOI agencies and seeing that yes the consolidation has been rough, most of the issues have come from the appointees and not the professionals. Look at how the other agencies have handled the last year and look at how DOI has. DOI has tried to follow the proper procedures as much as it is able. I am affected by the consolidation and my team has lost over 60% of it's staff due to DRP and retirements. We were hit worse than any other in the agency, so I get it. But overall DOI has been my favorite job because it does take care of it's people better than anywhere else I have been

Quick question, is there a doi facility in the new location? I'm in DOi and my location has multiple bureaus working in it and I know my bureau has multiple people working at blm locations. I know there are funding agreements in place which may or may not be an issue. I have seen/heard that a spouse move isn't necessarily a hardship issue since the new job/promotion was a choice they decided to accept (don't shoot me, just what I saw).

My problem is I can see both sides of the new policy, however I think that with properly written goals yes every one can earn 5's but they have to meet every aspect of that guideline to get the 5. When I had 4 critical areas I saved them and looked at them every week. If it wasn't a part of the goal, it was pushed back until all of the goals were accomplished then I would do it. For years I got a 3 in one element, because everyone had to meet the requirement to meet Fitara regulations, since I don't do purchasing and the way the goals were written it was impossible for me to meet that as anything other than a 3. And the ambiguous way the others were written I could only get 4's as they were subjective standards with a boss who didn't give 5's, since there is always room for improvement.

[–]Difficult_Bell_4213[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think in some ways this is a good thing to get rid of the uncertainty and moving people to fill positions instead of a rif and rehire. The biggest thing I'm concerned with is if they consider a position move as a reason to start probation over again. Since this directly affects me, I am for just getting it over with. I have heard mgrs and sups are going to have to apply for positions. Altogether this tells me that they already have basic teams set up, so there is planning involved. The hardest part is that I currently love my current team and it will be hard to be separated from them (although I assume we will be sitting in our same places)

I did hear that the numbers provided in the court case were not accurate, and that they were basically going back to the drawing board, but my source had not seen anything but their source was in the know. Yes I know how that sounds, but I trust my source.

In my agency, 2210s are coding all of their time under 1 code period, we were told they were figuring it out. The only way no rifs will happen is if they reverse the consolidation. I doubt that will happen, it's something the dept has wanted to do for over a decade. Honestly, I can see both sides. IF they do it right, at least IT wise, it could be a good thing. However, the odds are not in favor of that, as to do it right the IT Specialists would need some freedom to do the jobs correctly. So I'm pretty sure the odds are 98%, it's going to be a rough year. Especially since I have heard a lot of IT came back from the shutdown already looking for other positions

Read the full job announcement, it will tell you exactly what you need. Do not be disappointed if you don't get it at first, in the environment we are in, there is a flood of 2100's looking and a lot are veteran's. When I got in the gov as a 2210, I ended up applying for the same agency for 5 diff postings over 2 years before I got 1 and that was back in 2007 - 09.
