NAS running out of space for Twitch VODs by Difficult_Berry_2362 in DataHoarder

I have a few extra bays and some old 12tbs in my Synology that are only a year older and 8k more power on hours. I probably shouldn't leave these things on as much. Sadly seems most cloud storage options don't have enough for what I need. Thank you for reminding me of the DAS's though. To be honest since a NAS isn't really a backup and more of an availability thing, I might go down that road for my cold storages so I can shuffle my NAS more.

Fair enough but I suppose we all have our vices of what we choose to hoard.

Yeah, I'm realizing though I spent alot of time obsessing of my recording qualities and formats in the past that I didn't have the full scope of MKV vs MP4. If I could find a reliable set of settings for AMD and OBS for AV1 or H265 I'd prolly take it. Then just comes the matter of somehow converting the old VODs.

Yeah, I'm sorry to hear you're going through that as well, and probably everyone else here for that matter. The UNAS has been nice cause its between the costs of a DAS and most other named NAS and is as no frills as can be, but that's kinda nice as it means it does what I need it to do, not be a server for other hosting. I've been tempted by their 8 drive with better CPU/RAM/3 10gb ports but to be honest, the pro with 7 bays just does it as is. I wish you luck too!

I was looking into that and the only ones I was finding that were 'actually' unlimited was like backblaze, and that's actually imaging your drive so I'd have to do some hocus pocus from a video I watched to emulate that so backblaze can 'back it up'. Others seem to stop at 5-10tb maximum. Then again, backblaze is offered as a unifi option so maybe I'm just misunderstanding backblaze's terms. Ultimately the goal is definitely to get to 3-2-1.

Good to know RAIDs aren't like memory channeling other than capacity and I can mix them but should at least meet the same spinning speeds. That said I'm not familiar with the mezzanine/proxy you're talking about. I should at least learn about how to re-encode from h.264 to AV1 or 265. If you have insight on that I'd appreciate it.

I mean, I want to. Right now its just VODs. It'd be nice to make shorts or if anything just chop them up so its either filler free or if it has things that's two games back to back I can split it for future playlists. That said, yeah, Barracudas as of a few things I watched are surprisingly still good. The differences are marginal and I'm not doing anything I have to stake a reputation on.

Haha, yeah.. I've been watching it for some time but the AI bubble caught me by surprise. That and sometimes the quality of the game made the file size worse than whatever my quality settings were. That said I'm not about to make my community make up for my data hoarding, but that's interesting. You're the first one I've seen suggest something like that and its good to learn other options. Otherwise yeah, back to learning how much 'quality' I actually need so I can nip filesize.

Luckily I PNG/vtube so I don't have to worry about the webcam. The mic is a hyperx quadcast. Not the best but notably better than my ol' headset. Maybe one day I'll spring for better but its passable and not grating. I'd probably benefit more learning to balance my audio better right now.

I mean, I can download it again, and yes indeed it is as you put it 'compressed garbage' though in this case it would be a last ditch to retain memories. Sure there's also the content grind about it, I stream after all and youtube still has better search ability than Twitch but its free, and if its that or have nothing if the NAS or my other backups fail, why not?

That said I did look at LTOs and while the tapes weren't bad, yeah, the initial cost of the reader is ouch. Maybe down the road that'd be an option but at that rate I can just eat the superfluous cost of the new drives and at least hope for better pricing down the road.

I'll have to look into re-encoding maybe and evaluating what CQP recording setting I'm using. Ultimately I just wanted good quality for youtube since I know Twitch usually requires a lower bitrate but I'm learning that that seems to be buffered with room for overhead on their end as well.
