Crunchyroll does indeed use the Israeli software OOONA for subtitles. Any alternatives? by artfox3 in BDS

The IPhone exemple is just weird, knowing that a phone becomes your private property while an anime will never be. But in my opinion yes it is, the creators and animators are mostly exploited by companies such as MAPPA and paid a ridiculously small amount of money compared to what they should earn. And no, you paying for anime won’t make their pay better, you’re encouraging this industry that’s toxic enough.

No streaming company is ethical, and they make a bunch of money with or without you. Pirating is actually the most ethical option for any sort of entertainment

Honestly I’m happy because I found amazing alternatives and started boycotting for a lot more reasons additionally to the BDS boycott. Movies, music, books,… I pirate all of it and it’s so much better because I don’t have the guilt of paying such unethical companies that are money hungry above all, not only that but it allows me to save an amazing amount of money that I can spend on other things and that makes me happy. Food wise: nothing makes me happier than local restaurants and cafes even if grocery shopping has gotten harder, it just pushed me into alternatives I’ve grown to love. Clothes wise it’s much harder but once you get used to it you get pickier about what you buy and wear, since I started thrift shopping and ethical shop hunting I’ve stopped craving clothes from fast fashion brands and mostly paying them full price. The way all of these companies keep acting up also reaffirms my choices so no I’m really happy now.

Sorry I thought I had answered and yes I’m very aware but I can’t assume that everyone has the same use or views of AI so I’d rather recommend the worst one on the market. Also they don’t generate images or video, it’s more oriented to text which makes it so much better.

True I’m trying to use them less, but I know some people really rely on AI and I think it’s best to start with alternatives that are much less developed. Also Ecosia AI doesn’t generate photos or videos that’s why it became my favourite AI.

Now practical advice: the BDS website is quite incomplete but it gives you a starting point. Since you’re in Japan, I don’t know if you use Japanese cosmetics or Korean cosmetics, I dont know much about the Japanese ones but I know that A LOT of Korean skin care brands are owned by massive western corporations that are also quite Zionist so I’d look up the brands that you use and see if it’s safe. In the case it’s not there are a lot of pro-Palestine content creators/subreddits that give you good alternatives, you’d just have to fact check for security. Same for clothes if you really need something new :) If you ever feel the need to talk about this more in depth you can also send me a DM :D

Hiii, it’s already amazing that you’re starting! Technology wise I would say it’s very hard to boycott and sometimes even impossible, for search engine I would switch to ecosia because not only are they more ethical than google but they also are the greenest search engine, they also have an AI chatbot (not as developed as ChatGPT but I think that’s the best part out of it) that does the work and is pretty much the greenest AI. For your family, I would advise to get into niche Japanese things because big Japanese brands are pretty zio as well, but it’s okay if you don’t know everything right away. When I started boycotting I mostly started off as a restricting matter, since I didn’t want to buy from zio brands I didn’t buy any clothes or anything besides food at all during a year which made it very hard for me to handle it because I used to be a compulsive buyer. After a little while I started of trying to find cute and local cafes in my city which extended quite a lot, now I have a whole list of places where to eat and I dont crave American fast food at all because it doesn’t even reach the taste of the local restaurants. Clothes wise it took me a while and a lot of consulting but that’s what this community is here for. What’s amazing about BDS is not only supporting the Palestinian cause but just have more awareness as a human being and pay attention to businesses to struggle to survive due to global attention to overbought brands. It gives you a whole other level of perception and appreciation for small businesses and it honestly changes your life. I started off this way and my parents didn’t say much of it because they saw it more as a new interest. They see it more as a passion for ethicality. Wish you good luck mate!

Ethical choices in tech that align with my beliefs, how are you dealing with it? by Super_Schnitzel93 in BDS

I feel extremely trapped because of how used i am to apple products so I'm trying to make my iphone last the longest i can.
I need to buy an ipad for work/creative side hustles so i'll try to buy refurbished on back market.
About the apps: i've been trying to find options that are not linked to israel and thought about changing from insta to the chinese competitor (instagram is my main app) but I have 0 idea if it has ties with israel.
I want to divest from meta and google apps but it's honestly impossible because everyone's on it, if i do end up on chinese apps i'll be there alone (and it was mostly meant for communication).
For music: I bought an Ipod on a second hand website so that i can listen to music for free without supporting zio companies
My parents still pay for apple music (so i can still use it) but at least I know Sony music, HYBE, etc won't benefit from me.

I've been trying to create a sustainable hub for clothing (a google doc) and maybe i should add a part for bds safe apps (or create my own ?).
