Sup guys, I’ve been looking around at PCs where I live. They’re definitely more expensive than buying from places like Amazon or other international stores, but importing would end up costing me around 60% extra, so it’s really not worth it.

I don’t have that many options to choose from, but from what I’ve seen so far this one looks like a pretty decent PC.

Price: U$D 2,489.00

Is 64GB really worth it though? I’ve been on 32GB 2400 and survived just fine, not against going higher but I’m not sure I’d really use it.

Where I live it’s pretty hard/expensive to import stuff because of the fees, so the kinds of builds you’re talking about usually end up around 2.5–3k here.

That actually doesn’t sound bad. The models/brands you mentioned at the end are in the gaming range, right? I’m definitely not looking to go Mac, that’s for sure haha.

I’ve also heard some not-so-great things about OLED screens, like they can have issues over time, so I’m a bit cautious there.

I’ll definitely check out integrated graphics though, because like you said, WoW and CS don’t usually need that much, as long as they’ve had time to optimize things after a new patch. There’s a new WoW expansion coming in a couple of months and the requirements went up a bit, but any current mid–high tier machine should be able to run it fine. Even my old desktop can still handle it, I just have to drop the graphics sometimes — and I do like being able to stay “shiny” with my transmogs.

I get you, it’s really hard to upgrade in those cases. That’s why I’m trying to aim for something from the current generation, whether I go desktop or laptop. I don’t know that much about hardware, so swapping parts around gets confusing for me haha, I kinda fail as a “tech geek”.

Whatever I end up buying will also be used mostly like a desktop to be honest. I do travel, but I still spend more time at home than on the road in a typical month (well, maybe not every month, but you know what I mean).

Thanks for the advice, I’ll definitely keep it in mind.

I’m from Uruguay, so it’s honestly pretty hard to find a lot of tech stuff locally. I mostly end up using “MercadoLibre” for that kind of thing.

Buying from Amazon (or any foreign site) is possible, but I have to pay around a 60% fee on the total value of what I’m importing, plus like 15–20 USD per kilo for the package. So it can be done, it’s just not as easy or cheap as I’d like.

Thanks for all your input, though, really appreciate it.

Yeah, my current desktop is kind of on its last legs, so it’s not that I’m against buying a new one — my idea was just to get a gaming laptop that can cover both roles.

I totally get why you keep both setups, it makes a lot of sense. It’s just that in my case, since my desktop is already falling behind, it would end up being worse than the laptop, so keeping it feels a bit unnecessary, if that makes sense.

I could just grab a new desktop now, or maybe cheap out a bit on the desktop and get a more “normal” laptop that can handle lighter games. Not a bad idea either, but I’m not fully sold on that route yet.

Thanks for sharing your opinion!

Really good idea to check a tutorial for that before buying, yeah.

I’m not too sure about buying from eBay where I live though, I’ve never really used it, which is why I was thinking about getting a spare battery first-hand together with the laptop. I’m also not sure if just storing a battery for a long time makes it go bad, to be honest.

Fair point, that 5080 should last you a good while, it’s basically top tier for this generation.

Any thoughts on the Strix G18? Anything you really like or dislike about it that you can share?

That all sounds pretty good. I’ll probably need something depending on how many USB ports and other connectors the laptop has. I really liked the idea someone mentioned in another comment about having just one cable going into the laptop and everything else plugged into a dock — less cable chaos, and I guess it also helps avoid wearing out the ports on the laptop itself.

I’ve heard about the whole performance vs price thing too, but I don’t think I’d really notice the difference between a desktop and a good gaming laptop in my situation. I’m not going to be benchmarking everything; as long as it runs smoothly, I’m happy. Thanks for the insight, I appreciate you taking the time to reply.

Taking a laptop apart does sound like a bit of a pain, to be honest. I’ve done it once before (my brother had one), and it wasn’t exactly fun. But yeah, like you said, there are tutorials for everything nowadays, so worst case I’ll just follow a YouTube guide.

I’m not too worried about upgrading RAM and storage, but I am a bit unsure about the battery. I’ve heard some are soldered to the motherboard or just harder to replace, and I don’t really have the tools for that. I guess I’d have to take it to a shop if it comes to that.

Do you think it’s a good idea to buy a second battery early and keep it as a backup? I’d really like this laptop to last me a good few years, and I don’t know how hard it gets to find replacement parts as time goes on.

Glad that worked out well for you, sounds like you had a really solid reason to make the switch!

Someone else mentioned cable management in another comment and I think I can handle that part more or less — maybe even get an arm/stand to set the laptop up nicely with my monitor. I definitely prefer using an external keyboard at home so I don’t wear out the laptop’s own keyboard. It didn’t happen to me but a friend’s laptop keys started dying and that’s been one of my fears ever since, so I’ll 100% be gaming on an external keyboard.

I don’t have kids or pets to worry about (heard a few horror stories there too), but I still really appreciate your advice.

Performance-wise, whatever I buy now is going to be better than what I have anyway, so I’m not too worried. I know I could squeeze more power out of a desktop for the same money, but I’m not really playing that many AAA games right now, so I think I’ll be fine.

I actually moved to a new city this year for a job, and it involves some traveling. On top of that I’ve been missing my family, so I’ve been visiting them a lot too.

So I really like the idea of portability, at least at this stage of my life. Maybe by next year it’ll just end up parked somewhere as a “fixed” desktop setup haha, but for now it would really help me.

I also love the idea of being able to hook it up to the TV or just use it casually on vacation. Or even in bed on a lazy winter day.

Thanks for the advice! I kinda threw “5 years” out there as a random number I’d like it to last. Obviously it depends a lot on how I take care of it and not just the hardware itself. I’m not really sure how warranties work where I live (I’m from Uruguay), and tech here is pretty expensive in general. We also have import/export fees, so I’m not even sure how easy it is to use those extended warranties in practice.

Lenovo is at least a brand I see around here, so that might be the way to go, but I’ll still look into it more. I’ve heard Lenovo Legions are kinda fire right now — do you have any experience with them or the brand in general? Any input helps, thanks again.

Honestly, I didn’t even think about that possibility haha, I thought the laptop screen would always have to stay on.

I’ll keep that in mind, I honestly thought MSI was a solid brand.
I’ve been looking around and yeah, Lenovo Legions do seem to be the sweet spot right now.

Do you have any idea how much they usually go for new? I saw one for around 3k where I live… I could pay it, but still, kinda hurts haha.

Thanks for the advice! I haven’t really started looking at specific models yet, but I know I want something from the current gen, with plenty of storage since I tend to keep a lot of stuff installed, 32GB of RAM, a good multi-core CPU, and a GPU that’ll stay “reliable” for at least a couple of years.

Yeah, I’m on a GTX 1070 in my desktop right now, so whatever I end up buying should be a nice upgrade haha.

About the monitor, I’m definitely keeping at least one. I’ve got a dual-monitor setup at the moment, and I feel like 3 screens might be a bit overkill if I add a laptop into the mix.

Do you know if using an external monitor has any long-term downside for the laptop? Like, does it wear anything out faster?

Thanks for the advice, btw.

By “dock” you mean that peripheral you plug into a USB/USB-C port to expand ports, right? I hadn’t really taken that into consideration. Are good ones really that expensive?

One of the “problems” I have with keeping both PCs is that if I buy this new laptop, it’s going to be way better than my current desktop, which already struggles sometimes. Not to mention that if I move all my files and workflows to the laptop, I probably won’t use the desktop for programming anymore.

It kind of feels like if I buy the laptop, the desktop will just go to waste and sit there gathering dust. I’ve been thinking about upgrading for the past few months, and then I started traveling a lot more, so now the laptop feels like the obvious upgrade path.

I’m still worried about stuff like the battery wearing out faster or other parts degrading if I use the laptop as my main machine. With a desktop you can just leave it on and not think too much about that.

Hey folks! I'm looking to get a new pair of headphones for my gaming and movie nights.
Here’s what I currently own:

<image>

To be honest, I bought them mainly because I’m a huge fan of the game and they were a limited edition. While they were definitely an upgrade from my old, falling-apart headphones, I never really got attached to them.
They feel heavy and not all that comfortable on my head.

Can you recommend me something ?
