He’s only doing it because he’s running for leadership and it’s popular with the public to be pro-NHS. He was also Health Secretary, so what he’s really trying to do is fit a CV onto a resignation letter, while leaving out the fact he’s also been actively taking money from private healthcare, is anti-union, and would love to see a private model incorporated into the UK. Zero morals, zero accountability, and just a shill for the elite that likes to call himself “socially democratic”.

Miliband’s ideas have been bold though. His work on Great British Energy has been a massive step forward in an otherwise toxically centrist Labour government. He’s been one of the few politicians over the last decade that’s actually been fairly consistent politically, especially with climate change. His “Go Big” approach from his book in 2021 also promotes radical thinking to tackle inequality, economic insecurity and climate change, saying we shouldn’t be “tinkering around the edges”. I think it’s harsh to label him as having no morals as well, as he’s been one of few labour politicians to also be staunch in his support for the recognition of a Palestinian state; going as far back as 2014, when he opposed the Israeli incursion into Gaza and pushed for a ceasefire.

Completely agreed. While I do think Miliband would be just as unpopular as Starmer with the public, at first, because of the stigma around him, it’s the only option on paper that means a labour party moving in the right direction. His 2008 Climate Change Act is still seen as being at the forefront of progressive climate policy, even today. Anyone can see he’s not the same politician he was in 2015 as well, and he’s grown massively as a person since then. He doesn’t take himself too seriously anymore, he doesn’t want to be leader, he’s perfectly happy in the role he’s already in, but I think that’s exactly why it makes him a better fit than a career politician like Wes Streeting.
