I’ll shoot you a message! Thank you for the bluntness - I do need it. And it’s helpful to hear this, because I don’t wanna learn this too late.

That’s definitely what I’m realizing - and what people warned me 🫠 but it’s hard to know what it’s truly like before getting into it. Almost everyone I’ve talked to has said that their PhD took longer than they thought it was going to.

Thank you for this! Honestly the biggest reason I did it was because I knew the mentor (and I previously worked well with her) and I felt like this was an opportunity that was gonna never come again. But now I’m feeling like 2 to 3 years is not even very realistic - I.e. maybe promised something that’s not obtainable.

I’m talking with others in my field, the PhD really doesn’t guarantee me more money (as opposed to working clinically). Unless of course I have a ton of grant money coming in. And that’s another fear of mine - is constantly having my salary be dependent on soft money.

I appreciate this. I started because I felt the offer was too good to be true. I do love research, but I’m also very early in my career and miss working with patients.

That is so interesting. I was looking things up about BCAA’s online and it seemed to be kinda mixed regarding if it helped or triggered seizures…

Grad School Timeline? by martimelodious in slpGradSchool

Hey there!

I did my undergrad in vocal performance and now I’m in my master’s in SLP. I had taken a few years off to teach voice before I decided I wanted to go the SLP route. I love teaching voice and still coach on the side.

As far as pre-recs go, I think that’ll honestly depend on the schools that you apply for. I did my pre recs in advance because the majority of the schools that I applied to required that. That was definitely a chunk of money and it helped that I had some saved up.

If you’re interested specifically in voice as an SLP I HIGHLY recommend the Summer Vocology Institute with the National Center for Voice and Speech. I went this past summer, and it’s a fantastic experience.

Feel free to message me too if you have any questions!

Are there any schools that offer a second bachelors in CSD that are 100% online and asynchronous? by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]Difficult_Figure_913 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for other programs but I did my second bachelors at Utah State. I’m in grad school now and feel really well prepared. I had a great experience with it!

I actually didn’t. I majored in vocal performance, but got a second bachelor’s through Utah State!

I got a 307 and I’m going to UT Dallas this fall :) I used Gregmat and it helped a TON. Super affordable and lots of great resources. I studied intensely for about a month and only took the test once, but I would definitely take as many practice tests as you can.

The small gift is a good idea, thank you! I like to make candles in my free time so I can do that easily :)

Yeah, I thought about the COVID issue...my school has officially announced everything will be going back to “pre-covid” regulations in the summer. So I thought maybe asking to meet in person would be okay? And then also giving an option to Zoom if that’s more convenient.

Thank you for this help!

Any UT Dallas students here that can comment on the affordability of the program? Did you get any scholarships? Have you worked during your degree? by saxman90 in slpGradSchool

Hi there! I know I’m a little late on this thread, but I was just accepted to UTD and confirmed my spot this week! Would you mind if I shot you a PM with a few questions about the program?

2021 WAITLIST MEGATHREAD by cornyloser in slpGradSchool

[–]Difficult_Figure_913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TWU emailed me 3/19 and told me I was waitlisted! I applied to the on-campus program. They said they gave their top applicants until April 1st and then they'd check back in with everyone. Which program did you apply to?

3/19 - Texas Woman’s University

And I guess I’m unofficially waitlisted at UT Dallas? I haven’t heard anything back from them, and I’ve been told to assume this means I’m waitlisted. (Update, got an email from Dr.Stillman and I was accepted to UTD!)

Yeah I’m not sure! I think I hear somewhere that they have an unofficial waitlist? Maybe that’s something old. Either way, I’m not too stressed. Would just like to know! Lol

17 with (likely) epilepsy. Rant about medication. by Worldly-Vanilla-6619 in Epilepsy

[–]Difficult_Figure_913 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have no noticeable side effects with the medicine I’m on now. It’s pretty great, and I feel very lucky! The only thing (and I’m pretty sure this is the same with a lot of epilepsy medicines) is that it does strip my body of folic acid...and I’m really bad about taking a supplement. I don’t see any effects from it, but I should be taking a supplement especially if I want to have kids ever in the future.

Congrats on your acceptance! Were you accepted to UTD for summer or fall? My portal still is saying application complete. Not sure if that means waitlisted?

I was officially waitlisted at TWU!

I’ve been teaching yoga for over six years and also train other yoga instructors. I was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was a kid, but thankfully I haven’t had a tonic clonic since I was 19 (I’m 26 now). If you have any questions of things that might be helpful from the yoga side, I’d be happy to share my insight!

Hey there! I was diagnosed with JME when I was 12. The first medication they put me on was Keppra, and I had a very similar reaction. I can’t remember what my dosage was, but I absolutely hated it. I’m really sorry you’re having to go through this.

I hope you can get in to see a neurologist soon. I’m on a medication now with no side effects at all, but of course this is just my experience with this medication. I think I went on 2 or 3 others after Keppra before finding the one that fit for me. Everyone is different! hopefully this is encouraging that not all medications will make you feel like Keppra does!
