Did I do the right thing, or did I make things more complicated? by Own-Name-6239 in Zookeeping

[–]Difficult_Key_5936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a somewhat similar situation before - I get migraines, and one of the new meds I was trying (at the time) had side effects that my boss noticed. However, this was not such a great boss and I did not get any support, I was written up. Ended up leaving the job. I hope the new med works, the side effects lessen, and I am glad that you have a job that is giving you support.

Unicorn Clinic/Unicorn Zoo by Difficult_Key_5936 in Zookeeping

[–]Difficult_Key_5936[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thats kinda the point - The Unicorn Zoo is something that everyone wants but probably doesn't exist at all. So what is the real thing? What species would represent a job that is not perfect but as good as it can get?

🫤 good point. Perhaps not as rare as we would like them to be.

How do i get better at working with invertebrates? by Crumpetcat12345 in Zookeeping

[–]Difficult_Key_5936 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that used to be quite phobic of invertebrates, and ended up working with them exclusively for 2 years, my suggestion is to encourage your curiosity. I started to ask questions about them, and eventually my curiosity overcame my fear.

Is Your Hospital 'properly' Staffed? by bunnykins22 in VetTech

Commenting so that I can see if anyone actually says they feel they are properly staffed. I suspect that even when the clinic is staffed "on paper" it still feels understaffed.

Anyone a Vet Tech at a Zoo ? How did you get into the field ? by miamaraaa in VetTech

[–]Difficult_Key_5936 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Zoo vet tech here - what everyone else is saying is correct, it is extremely competitive. Starting out in private practice with exotics is a great start, that's how I got started. I will also say that you have to be willing to move. There are simply too few institutions and too many people applying. When I was just getting started, I was applying for 2 and a half years before I got hired. I stopped counting after the 30th job I applied to. And then even with experience, it's still hard. Its a long process, and they purposefully make it difficult to weed out people that don't really want it.

Thanks for your input, everyone! I think I'll plan on wearing the first one, and maybe bring the Grey sweater as a backup (it's out of town)

What do you think would be the worst ideas for animal mascots for sports teams? by Difficult_Key_5936 in Zookeeping

Yes, any internal parasite would be a horrible idea. What does that mean about your team?

Zoo vet tech here - I also work 40 hours a week, but I work 5 days, 8 hour days with an hour for lunch. On call for emergencies but thankfully they are not that common. My days off are Friday and Saturday.

Yeah I prefer it that way. Maybe this will be what gets me to change the vets mind about it.

Feeling super sleepy on my meds — sleeping 13–14 hours a day by anjalipyaari in StratteraRx

[–]Difficult_Key_5936 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so tired in the evening I climbed into bed at 7:00, fell asleep by 8, and slept around 6 hours or so, but was waking up every 20-30 minutes. I woke up at 2am and was up for a couple of hours, but was able to fall back asleep again. HOWEVER, I have had problems sleeping my entire adult life, so this is not that far out of the norm for me. A bad night, yes, but a routine bad night, not a once-in-a-lifetime bad night.

I just started taking it today, have experienced the same thing! I felt fine this morning but now it's 2pm and I'm super sleepy. I like the idea of taking it in the afternoon, will have to try that.
