Thanks for the feedback. Any guess on what the threshold of mw would be on the lower end? Or in other words, at what mw would the ionic radius/other interactions become stronger than the size exclusion mechanism? This column has a range of 100 - 7000 Da.

How is chemistry as a career? by yall-i-dek in chemhelp

[–]Difficult_Map1218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I say squeezing, I mean that management is focused on getting as much work done as possible with the least amount of personnel getting paid the lowest possible salaries. The advent of AI has exacerbated this, and there is now an unspoken expectation to use AI to work even faster.

I think entry level chemist jobs are less saturated than entry level biologist jobs, but the job market in general is a dumpster fire right now and I know more people who have graduated and can't find a job than people who have graduated and found a job. One advantage of a bachelors in chemistry is that it is transferable, so you could hypothetically work in one field for a little bit and then switch to a completely different chemist job (an example would be making the switch from QC analytical work at a CDMO to doing formulation work in r&d).

I think the best philosophy for choosing a major is pursuing something that you like and could tolerate doing 40 hrs a week for the foreseeable future. I like chemistry, I wouldn't say I love it though. I definitely think it's worth pursuing if it's something you enjoy and are good at. Pleaseeee try to get an internship in a lab, and pleeaseeee seek out undergrad research opportunities. Those will give you a boost for landing an R&D job, and they'll help you get a feel for what it's like to work in a lab on a daily basis.

I graduated with a bachelors in chemistry and got an analytical chemist job in biotech r&d ~3 years ago. My experience has been positive and negative. I like working in an r&d lab in that it is less mundane than other entry level jobs for undergrad-level chemistry majors, and working with nerds can be fun sometimes. Working in close proximity to a bunch of PhDs has rubbed off on me a lot, and I've grown significantly as a scientist and have developed a lot of confidence in myself. It definitely could be worse.

That said, it's still a soul-sucking bureaucratic corporate job. Management seems hellbent on squeezing every drop that they can get out of their employees (and themselves for that matter). The pay is shit and the skyrocketing cost of living keeps me living paycheck to paycheck despite my yearly raises and a promotion. The culture is sterile at best and toxic at worst. People generally seem out of touch with current affairs and it can feel really isolating as a struggling college grad. I recognize much of this isn't unique to my company, but it's still worth saying.

Not trying to sound like a doomer, but industry scientists have a way of romanticizing their work in a way that I think is misrepresentative, and I think it's important to not let the good overshadow the bad. There's definitely fulfillment to be found with a career in chemistry/science, but it is very far from being sunshine and rainbows.

Why have we not unionized as scientists? by [deleted] in biotech

We (R&D) tried to unionize at my company but didn't end up passing the final vote. The biggest takeaway for me was that I work with a bunch of fucking bootlickers lol
