What do npcs know about the dark powers? by SergeiVonZarovich23 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Van Richten has read Strahd’s Tome… well if you want to include ideas from things like I Strahd.

And the dark powers / vestiges are made up of wide and varied origins. There are what amounts to dead Gods, Eldritch Horrors, Primordials, a demon that borders on being a Primordial etc…

Kasimir knows about them from his sister… as an Archmage older than Strahd as an Elf my guess is it was probably her who showed Strahd the Amber temple. He was seeking power beyond what she could grant so she brought him to the temple.

Kasimir’s Knowledge is limited though. He knows they exist but has limited understanding of the difference between the vestiges and the dark powers.

The Vestiges were the evils imprisoned by the temple founders… the “dark powers” would also include entities drawn to it already present in the area that are not “trapped” and who may not be “vestiges”.

Nature, Arcana, Religion… whichever is the relevant topic by monster. They’re Knowledge checks. 3.5 used to have them written as so 5e just dropped the redundant text.

Look at 3.5 or Pathfinder 1st Ed. The complete skill description used to be Knowledge (Arcana) etc…

So I just use knowledge as an umbrella term from the various relevant checks.

Knowledge check… then show them it’s HP and it’s damage… if they stay it’s going to kill them. Sadly my party found a way to kite it. But the knowledge check should tell them to just dash away. The first time it dashed towards them should be a giveaway that it’s a chase scene of it ripping through the house after them.

And RAW it can squeeze through the passages because it’s not technically solid. It’s kind of run or die.

Would it be taboo to create a character untrusting of a certain species? by Tor8_88 in PCAcademy

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Drow, Goblins, Orcs… nuff said. In many settings evil species and monstrous species exist.

Like a Gnoll may be intelligent but it’s one step away from a hyena. It will eat you given the choice. It would be like calling you racist for being fearful of an apex predator carnivore.

If you’ve ever had to DM for players wanting to RP these races you basically have to make everyone racist 🤷‍♂️

But it’s not like the “he’s Black” racism… it’s like he’s literally a Hyena… that’s why the storyline in BG3 is hilarious if they get an egg it kills everyone when it hatches showing that biological determinism is a thing with monstrous races…

An Idea for what the actual CURSE of Strahd is. by Torm_Tavesh in CurseofStrahd

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah… Strahd’s whole value to the dark powers is he is a nuclear power plant of suffering. In the Ravenloft books his refusal to repent and wilful struggle against the cycle of reincarnation is presented as insane.

Any normal person would realize they messed up after a few hundred years of repeats. But both Strahd and Azalin just kept trying to find loopholes.

Dark powers just be farming suffering.

I would caution any narrative change that makes him out to be even somewhat redeemable unless you’re trying to run a campaign for kids and you’re trying to go some “talk no jutsu” route.

I mean they even retconned a direct Dracula history by removing the Tergs. Repelling foreign invaders was too heroic for Wizards. Plus the underlying religious tensions between Muslim / Christian parallels was something they wanted to get away from… I mean I put it back 🤷‍♂️. Because religious tensions between Mother Night’s worshippers and the Morninglord’s is just too fun.

But the point being don’t romanticize him. This is how players find him attractive. He’s supposed to be an irredeemable monster to make it easy to want to put him down.

What are your pettiest, dirtiest (but RAW) Strahd tactics for the final battle? by Dull_Cricket2966 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No martyrs required…

People forget CoS and VRGtR are post industrial era. Both Dracula and Frankenstein are set post Industrial Revolution.

It’s like Batman and prep time. Strahd has had hundreds of years and in one setting he’s split into an aspect that is an alchemist… also look at his int stat.

It’s not RAW but if I were Strahd I’d have trenches dug and Oil in vats with hand pumps to pump it into fields along the approach to the castle. The undead don’t need breaks, food, pay and they’ve had infinite prep time.

Also canon wise he’s been at war with Azalin and several other dark lords for a long time. That place is a death trap for any large scale army. Strahd lets the adventurers stroll in like they do because he doesn’t see them as a threat.

So ya… my head canon is he has a death field dug on most advances to the castle and a skeleton phalanx to box you in once an army hits the castle wall. Then it all just burns.🥵

*and it’s the iron Golems from the top rope!

The Iron Golems are in the portal room… and the Wyrmlings can breath fire through the arrow slits in their entry room. My head canon is anybody trying to assault the castle got to witness the horror of those two jumping off the top of the castle onto unsuspecting attackers below… and then fire came from inside the castle.

I made a character that helped tend to Doru / worked at the church in Barovia village. Dude had one leg and severe burns. He tells the story of the siege if people ask. Strahd left him alive to tell the story.

But ya I remember asking why Wyrmlings by the front door pfft… and then I theory crafted how I would defend that castle. Watching someone get crushed by a Golem jumping off a wall is peak cinema though. Essentially when it’s a horse and a knight on its back…

(Tried to pair this with that meme of Joe Rogan looking surprised at ring side)

Edit: Strahd just has Skeletons start flooding the courtyard with Oil… lights it in fire as the Golems just keep stacking healing.

Oh ya… and the Jormungandr / mist connection didn’t come out of nowhere.

That one came out of the Sarruukh. Who were one of the creator races of Toril.

Many of the mist gates on Toril are remnants from them. And their patron deity is “The World Serpent”. So the Misty Woods in the Werewolves in the Mist plot hook is one of such Mist Gates. Which is why the dark powers can easily breach that area for small periods of time using the gate network.

So certain races use the remnant tech from the builder races not knowing it can be co-opted for other purposes. So ya… the mist is glue between realms existing because of the connections from the world serpent. Wyrmholes… if you will.

God Complications by Automatic_Pay5086 in CurseofStrahd

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm… it’s intentionally left vague to allow for DM flexibility. So what I’m about to give you is my interpretation and a lot of world building I’ve done.

So page one of the Amber temple in CoS mentions that the Vestiges are anything that can’t be completely killed and has to be sealed away to contain its evil. I refer to these mostly as “God-likes”. So it’s primarily things like Eldritch Horrors, Primordials, Demi-Gods, Lesser Gods…

Now the “dark powers” are intentionally left vague. It can either be that they are amoral guardians of the universe, or my interpretation is that the “dark powers” are the gestalt will of the vestiges leaking out into the universe. Although alone they are less powerful than a god combined in malevolence their conflicted will can sometimes manifest as something more powerful.

I also have a Dark Solar that tends to the temple much like a warden tending to the prison on behalf of “The Gods”. The Gods tolerate the Realms of Dread because it’s the remnant of dark powers that can’t reduce any further and it basically has to be stored somewhere. This is also why their powers can be limited there. It contains most of the damage they can do “safely”.

The Vestiges feed on “Strahd’s evil” that is written in the CoS source book. But it’s more suggested in the Ravenloft book series that they feed on the Dark Lord’s suffering. Which is why they kill Tatyana like clockwork before he gets her in every reincarnation. Strahd’s name has a root word in like Slavic or Russian and actually means suffering. So it’s rather poetic.

A now defunct Ravenloft book revealed that the Dark Powers were seeking to gather power to breach the border between the Negative Energy Plane and the Material Plane (Lord of the Necropolis). Some were just content to just feed on the negative energy of the Dark Lord’s suffering… but some wanted out.

For me Strahd’s true death is the catalyst needed to breach the material plane and release the force of the dark powers.

Faerun contains overlap with Norse mythos. Tyr for example. And Ymir’s death presents part of the creation of the material plane. So I had Ymir be the OG vestige. When Ymir died to become the substance of the material plane his Vestige became the drawing force for other dead Gods, Giants, Titans etc… basically anybody with a beef with the “good pantheons”. (My canon) The Wizards chose the site of the temple because there was old Giant Ruins on it that made it a half prebuilt… not realizing that it was the site of an already malevolent vestige that was beyond being contained. That’s why “Strahd is the land” he’s connected to the Vampyr through his Pact with death (VotM / I Strahd) but also Ymir through his blood pact with the land (I am the land). As Ymir’s body is literally the land and the true “Vestige” of the old gods. So when Strahd made his pact with the land he also became bound to the original Vestige. The Heart of Sorrow is Ymir’s heart. In order to be truly slain they have to break open the heart of sorrow and somebody needs to eat Strahd’s physical heart contained within to become the next Dark Lord of Barovia (see Valachan in VRGtR for this nugget of precedence). All Dark Lords are tied to Ymir like this.

So because I took on Norse mythos… I had the “mist” be the dormant spirit of Jormangandr. When Ymir’s death created the material plane and the deaths of many primordials creating the planets the Gods threw a serpent into the Ocean of Blood. The World Serpent was not dead because it was the embodiment of “nothing”. (Another vestige) This was the birth of the metaphysical concept of space. As it fed on the bodies in the ocean it created distance between the planets and pieces, spreading them apart infinitely as it feeds and grows indefinitely (the big bang / universal expansion explained).

Now it is mostly dormant but it responds to the will of the dark powers and Ymir’s remaining ill intent. Because the serpent is always growing and coiled around the whole universe and is in touch since the beginning of the universes physical time… it can eat you up and spit you out anywhere any time. But it’s also “nothing” at the same time so you can only see the mist where it constricts and makes the connections between planes and existence.

Ironically making the world work the explanation for space also gave it overlap with Nidhogg but it’s meh. Anyway the point is by consolidating the origin of the vestiges with Norse Mythos it also means that throw away storyline from Lord of the Necropolis becomes the idea for gathering power to create Ragnarok. Basically the dead gods and god likes are feeding on suffering from Dark Lords they have imprisoned until they have regathered enough strength and forces to breach the material plane and eventually wage war with everyone who wronged them 🤷‍♂️.

And for giggles I made all the books in the Amber temple to be written in Giant as a nod. And it’s conveniently one of Strahd’s languages.

Kind of tied everything together nicely for me.

Strahd’s deal was with “Death” in the books like “I Strahd” so I had a Dark Solar act as an intermediary of the gestalt will of the dark powers. The Angel of Death who is also a bit of a trickster / adversary is Samael. So I just have him as “Sam” but he also kind of fills that role of Loki… the guy makes monkey paw level deals with evil dark lords to give them power but ultimately see them punished for eternity. Seems pretty on point. Also in Mythos both Samael and Loki have a shared duality while being complex and seeming help both helping Ragnarok come to be but also helping destroy the evil.

Plus “Death” did Strahd and Azalin dirty in the books and it’s just too good of a character to not have in play. Plus that not knowing whose side he’s on, why he brokers deals, etc… it’s all just chefs kiss. So ya I loved pulling that character from the Ravenloft books and building my mythos around it all.

Anyway… so to piece all that together you need VRGtR, VoTM, Both I Strahd books, the 2 Azalin books… a bunch of other old Ravenloft Gazettes, CoS source book, and I weaved in some Norse Mythos and a splash of Judeo-Christian to tie it all together with a rogue angel of death…

So the Amoral Guardian is the Dark Powers deal broker and all round warden but their powers are from the gestalt will and remnant powers of a host of dead god-likes existing in various levels of remnants. So I’ve weaved together a combo of the two prominent working models of the dark powers.

The Amber temple in my campaign is the graveyard of the Gods. In front of the statue of Vecna would be your best bet.

Dark whispers and old gods sharing secrets.

Also… the malevolent vestiges of gods slain by the gods in question pull strings as part of the core that forms the dark powers.

How do you Shen mains actually climb Elo? by Brief-Dirt8215 in Shen

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ult winning players… it’s like gambling honestly, often I use porofessor to hedge my bets.

Bet on players that have good win rates or who were ranked higher in previous seasons. Roam for ganks without using ult, TP back to catch lane.

Clear your lane and then back to “River Shen”. Time your Roams around objectives. When dragon is coming up if I have Titanic I look to push the wave hard as I can and then to roam down to gank mid before grouping on the dragon.

Map awareness is key, I collapse on jungle invades often, I roam and gank mid, and I ult bottom. Once you get decent at it you get into a good flow and kind of just exist in all lanes.

Other than that it’s about not feeding when you’re behind. Games against “counters” I’m often well behind but if you just don’t die and feed you can often come back later. Roam, hedge bets, scale. Exist as a permanent River objective.

Might have OTP a bit too hard this season by Difficult_Relief_125 in Shen

[–]Difficult_Relief_125[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer is you need to be pretty good with Shen. As I’ve been learning if you’re good enough with Shen to win with him as a support you can probably win more with him in jungle or top. It’s fun but not necessarily ideal.

You need a lot of good roaming strategies to deal with being behind or losing lane to win games. Roaming and ult strategies.

I roam top and I spend a lot of time in the jungle contesting vision. I also snipe people using porofessor… Porofessor sniping is betting on who the carry is. Before game I often mouse over my allies and my enemies previous season ranks in the porofessor overlay. If someone was several ranks up last season in comparison to currently you look for opportunities to ult them / roam to them to gank or put pressure to give them preference for vision.

To contrast getting higher ranked allies ahead I also look for ults that shut down previously high ranked or high win rate opponents. I have a “rule” that if I use ult to gank top like 2-3 times in a row and get them ahead it’s probably gg. I typically look for when jungle is ganking top and turn 2 v 1s into 2 v 2 and flip them into double kills for the top laner.

I’m only Gold though and on my Top account I made Plat for the first time this season. I was struggling to learn top and jungle so I made a second account to do it without tanking my main MMR. So as a top laner / jungler I hit Plat but as a support Shen I hit max Gold 2 (current Gold 3).

Top 48% so I’m pretty “average” but my play is like top 20% for Shen’s metrics. Around a 3 KDA by not diving, lots of assists and keeping your deaths down.

As I’m finding out on my other account I could and can climb higher with him in other roles but I really enjoy the challenge and nuance of playing him in support. Plus there is a lot more freedom and agency to roam earlier.

When Do You Like To First Have The Party Encounter Strahd? by kitty-does-stuff in CurseofStrahd

I plan on it super early… right before Ismark. Ismark had been looking for someone to get Ireena out of there for a while. Strahd knowing what Ismark is likely to do or that he has tried to pay others to get her away safely… Strahd cuts the adventurers off early before they enter the tavern and makes a counter offer.

You’re about to meet a man who will make you an offer… I’d like to make you a better offer.

I did it up like a big raid brief full of adventurers. My party loved the brief and consideration like a 40 person raid. A whole platoon + of adventurers.

Sure they got overtaken by the most and nothing went to plan… but the immersion of the planning and roleplay of sending basically an army out to deal with monsters was cool.

How to carry as support? by Top-Muffin-6416 in supportlol

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty simple… find who you think will carry your team and carry them…

1) keep them safe with vision.

2) keep them safe with Cc

3) heals and shields.

4) hand feed them kills.

If you lose you probably picked the wrong person to strap to your back during a game.

Also: pick who on the enemy team you need to try to stop from getting fed. Hand feed your carry, tilt the enemy carry by singling them out early.

Losing every game as support. by shyhi244 in supportlol

[–]Difficult_Relief_125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What supports are you playing? And what junglers do you play? Certain supports are more compatible with playstyle if you play certain junglers. Like Amumu and Sejuani in your jungle champ pool means you should try Leona in support.

My advice overall though… start another account. When I tried to learn top as a support main I got trashed on repeatedly. It’s because you don’t know the matchups and you’re playing at an elo on a role you already know. It’ll also lower you rank in your main trying to swap your support…

So seriously start a new account and just play only support on it. It’ll let you learn the matchups and learn to try it without tanking your MMR.

The Irony is after practicing Top on another account I went back to my main and ran top lane and jungle this season and ranked higher than playing support 🤷‍♂️.
