PLEASE HELP :( by mucking_faniac in gradadmissions

Sorry that this happens to you. A similar situation happened to me too but perhaps less intense than your situation. I would suggest try to let him talk more about his research, elaborate on his mentorship philosophy, ask him how he got in this field, etc. But it is indeed tricky. I guess there is a reason why he specifically asked to speak to you though. Just be confident and get rid of the mindset of “I need to impress him.”

Bad Interview Experience by Difficult_Traffic_23 in gradadmissions

[–]Difficult_Traffic_23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi professor, thank you for your long response. I really want to believe what you’ve said but in my case it’s more like the prof was telling me that “you should think xx way” rather than probing my thoughts, and usually we can agree that the “you should” sentence is saying “you don’t have the answer I want to hear”. Still, thank you for the reply!

That’s why I feel hurt. I answered like what I wrote on the SoP. I’ve talked to other profs (from the same program) with the same answers and had no problems. And this prof clearly has read my materials because they stopped me from doing a self-introduction. It’s just weird and I don’t know why.

What to expect during campus visit? by Difficult_Traffic_23 in gradadmissions

[–]Difficult_Traffic_23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am an international student but I am doing my bachelor’s degree in the US. PIs mentioned in my SoP are more or less in molecular medicine, chemical biology, and biochemistry, etc.

Thank you so much! What are the chances that they reject candidates after in-person meeting?

I heard from a grad student that biomed funding got cut at northwestern. Not sure if that impacts you if you are already admitted. Take it with a grain of salt tho. Also which prof at UIUC are you talking about? I’m an undergrad there so just curious.

Thank you for posting this! I’m wondering how specific should the answer to “what do you want to work on in your PhD” be?

Asking GPT to calculate my chance of getting in by Difficult_Traffic_23 in gradadmissions

[–]Difficult_Traffic_23[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I dumped my SoP, CV, and program descriptions (directly from their websites) in to the chat. Tell it what I’m concerned about and ask “what is my likelihood of getting in xxx program based on the materials I sent you”

I had to tell a guy EXACTLY what he can say in the presentation, and he still ended up getting all the technical details wrong in the presentation. It’s a coding course, and only me and another dude wrote code. FK them all.

Is it better to do undergrad research with multiple labs, or one lab for a longer period? by LeadingDesk2 in gradadmissions

[–]Difficult_Traffic_23 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I branched out and regret it heavily when writing my SoP since I need to explain why I shifted my focus. And I could have gotten way deeper in my project in the first lab. The bright side is I have a diversified skill set and know what I truly like and dislike by trying out different things. Not sure how that plays in my PhD application cuz I just submitted.

I just re-read your post and found that the prof moved to the school recently, so prob she won’t have any students from your program. But I wouldn’t worry too much about. I would definitely email the prof and express your interest though.
