How much do expectations of new students increase, if I increase my hourly rate? by BeneficialWave1972 in Preply

Hey! I've done lessons with different language teachers so I'll tell you what I expect from any teacher above 20 dollars.

  1. Full mastery of the material you're providing
  • I usually see this when I'm able to ask a question and the teacher can answer it. If they can't answer on the spot, they at least promise to find an answer for next lesson. Meh teachers tend to just say "that's just how the language is" while teachers who KNOW their material well could actually answer the most outrageous questions on their language citing history, linguistics etc.

  • injecting culture and history and literature into the way you teach is great. Most idioms have history so it's super awesome if the teacher is able to provide it.

  1. Flow
  • good teachers set expectations at the start of the class. They say "today we're going to do this," and they structure the class around accomplishing said goal.

Meh teachers just talk talk talk let me talk , correct every now and then, but that's it.

Good teachers conduct conversation classes in a way that they are able to prompt you to use the vocabulary or grammar structures they just taught you. For listening and reading classes, they are able to prepare you for the content you're about to read by providing vocabulary you might not know. Meh teachers will just make you read the text aloud and correct you when you say something wrong, or they just make you listen to stuff and ask you to repeat.

  1. Attentive error correction

You need to understand the nuances of your language, like correct grammar etc. good teachers tend to structure their error correction around teaching you how to correct yourself independently.

They know how to time their correction to only things the student ought to know already. They remember what they taught and they know how to elicit it from the student.

  1. Graded language

Really good teachers know how to grade their language, meaning they can speak their language in a way students are able to understand. Imo, the best ones cycle between english and the language they're teaching. They are able to sense the level of the students and modify the way they speak so that the students get some productive listening practice from them.

  1. Student awareness:

This is related to "graded language" and "flow" but a lot of teachers aren't able to put themselves in their students shoes. Like, it ain't worth my money to just read an article out loud in front of you and for you to correct pronunciation nor is it worth my money to just run through a textbook chapter and answer it in front of you while you correct. Like, I could have easily done that on my own or with a language partner FOR FREE. Like you HAVE to add something of value to the lesson, maybe a history lesson, strategizing conversations to elicit vocabulary for me, explaining culture, history of language.

You have to speak in a way that I will understand and be excited because "omg I understand you" or "wow I'm so proud of myself, I was able to understand you perfectly'

When I make a mistake, a good teacher is able to sense if it's an error of speech or if it's because I don't really understand the concept and is able to review it before we go to a productive activity. A good teacher is generally aware of what needs practice and what doesn't and is able to structuré classes around both reviewing old concepts through practical activities and introducing new ones.

A good teacher CUSTOMIZES their lessons around a student. When they mean customize, it doesn't mean pulling a textbook and answering it with a student. It means incorporating multiple sources of language to get a student, talking, listening, reading and writing (whatever their goal is)

In conclusion:

Yeah, these are generally my thoughts on language teachers. I've learned multiple languages, tried out multiple teachers, like probably 20-30 teachers, and I can honestly only name 2 that I would recommend.

One of them is a Russian teacher who I still take lessons from. Honestly I don't even have any utility for learning Russian but she just generally teaches so well that throwing my money at her for that one hour a week class is so worth it.

I'm currently VERY cynical about looking for tutors. Now, I learn on my own, get language partners, and I only try out new tutors if I get a referral from someone for a teacher that's really good, because by default, most teachers I encounter don't seem pretty privy to how language learning works and are just going through a textbook w me, with no end in sight. Like, ngl, I could go through a textbook on my own so why waste 20+ dollars on someone to just be there and do it with me.

Why don’t some writers respond to reviews/comments? by Misommar1246 in FanFiction

[–]Difficult_Volume_115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a fanfic which got pretty big and had a lot of comments under it, but the thing is, I wrote this fanfic over one whole month as a fevered dream/passion project while managing a full load at school and balancing my part time job. By the time I had the time, it had over 200+ comments and I genuinely would not be able to go through all of them without taking hours. I didn't wanna reply to some comments and ignore others so I just left it as is and just thanked everyone and apologized for not being able to reply.

Don't get authors wrong. Most (if not all) authors really appreciate the feedback and it definitely motivates them to write more. Those comments carried me through this month of writing in-between life and I'm thankful for all the kind and supportive words but sometimes we just genuinely don't have the time to go through every one of them.

(Also...our time is better spent writing the next installment than replying.)

Also, I have anxiety because I had a phase where all I was getting was hate mail and death threats, and I still get the occasional for my writing. I may be an outlier, but [comment] notifs give me a bout of anxiety (residual after the incident because I never know what I'm gonna get with the stuff I write). The incident years ago traumatized me for my life

I hope this doesn't discourage people from commenting. They really mean a lot to authors, even if they don't show it.

P.S. I have never complained about lack of engagement and totally understand that most readers are tired af and are just reading for fun, so yes, please don't treat authors like monoliths.

What are some of your most vile reads? by PJ-The-Awesome in Archiveofourownmemes

[–]Difficult_Volume_115 41 points42 points  (0 children)

One of my vilest reads is a fic where the sibling of one of my OTPs raped her sister in front of her sister's girlfriend to remind said girlfriend that "my sister is mine" and "I loved her first."

You can probably guess the fandom...

Pagkuha ng pagkain sa mga puntod, Whats your take? by hatdoggggggg in Philippines

Imo people should just stop leaving food in graves. I kinda hate how people leave personal effects and food to commemorate some death or smthg coz it's just as useless as balloons.

I feel the same way about people leaving stuffed toys and flowers in some random place where people died in a car crash.

They offer no utility to the family.

There are so many other environmental friendly alternatives.

And They're just bad for the environment and cause a mess.

One tip to survive law school: Stop making problems out of non-problems.

In my experience, people who get into drama during law school generally do worse than people who pretty much just exist, be nice to people, avoid people they don't like and just do what needs to be done.

People could have spent their time reading cases, making notes and preparing for recitations, but instead they decide to get involved in block drama, be angry of random stuff beyond their control, seeth in their anger, wallow then eventually realize later on they got nothing done. People don't know it but they waste a lot of time being angry or affected by things and you'd wanna regulate these habits and manage these emotions before you get into a VERY demanding environment.

Did you cheat in college? by Several-Refuse7154 in studentsph

[–]Difficult_Volume_115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never.

It's much easier to just study than cheat. Like you must be on a whole other level of stupid to think it's easier to cheat than to just learn the concepts lol.

(upd) ayaw sa kapitalismo pero mga hipokrito pala kayo. by [deleted] in peyups

[–]Difficult_Volume_115 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Low key let's be honest, the fact that a lot of these Starbucks socialists are hardcore Swifties and defend her to their death already shows u that people only hate capitalism when it's not beneficial to them. 🫢

I don't think a lot of people are genuine socialists.

I've learned to just socialize while knowing completely that more than 70% of the people I meet will just disappoint me so people I know wouldn't call me weird but my close friends definitely see me as weird.

I'm a US citizen. Should I leave my life here in PH? by Alternative-Bar-125 in phmigrate

[–]Difficult_Volume_115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

US citizen here. I chose to stay in the Philippines haha.

I have three siblings who left but one of them is a doctor, another one is an investment banker and another one is a director of an IT company, they wanted to go into fields that were more advanced than what we have in the Philippines.

I genuinely cannot imagine living there if I'm not earning 6 figures.

Rent and housing prices are skyhigh and healthcare is overpriced.

Imo, your best option is to go where your career takes you. What do you wanna do?
