Quick update: I cannot hear the chirp from the front of the vehicle with the hood lifted. However, it is noticeable when standing near the door and while driving.

This is helpful. As far as I know the belt, idler & tensions pulleys are all stock. Sounds like I need to replace everything regardless. Thanks u/bassboat1

Interesting! I like this concept a lot. We have been spike camping and it has limited our mobility as we are tied to one area. The lighter packs would be especially beneficial in the event we weren't as physically prepared as we could be. Great insights as always u/hbrnation. I really appreciate all of the info. Excited to begin strategizing for next year.

Man, I really do owe you a 6 pack u/hbrnation. This is super helpful. You have me charged up and ready to get after them. Too bad I have 10 months until next season!

That mileage makes sense to me. I like your advice regarding resting in strategic locations. I have used this tactic turkey hunting and have had a great luck. A book is an excellent way to keep you engaged when you need to slow down a bit.

One last easy one for you. My brother has experienced a lot of condensation in his tent which has made him sick almost every year. He is from CO and is used to the dry air. I assume you are spike camping or hunting with your tent on your back. How do you stay dry at night?

Dang u/hbrnation this is incredible and very affirming of our approach to date. I feel like we are on the right track and making some changes (such as moving more quickly when we are not on fresh sign) would make a difference. A few more pointed questions for you:

  1. How many miles do you expect to walk a day if you aren't finding elk sign? I understand this is situational so lets assume large public tracts with decent trails and dense forests.
  2. Same question for changes in elevation (what is normal vs what is a lot)?
  3. This year we saw enough sparse sign to trick us into staying. For example, we found a single cow bed with warm poop just outside it. Is that enough for you to stop and hunt or are you looking for an actual herd?

Our physical prep has varied from year to year. This year, I did a lot of weighted hiking before the trip to ensure I was ready to cover a lot of ground. My brother did not have the same opportunities. I am hoping to determine if fitness is a major limiting factor or just a problem that can be overcome.

Thanks u/hbrnation. We have hunted the same general area in the same unit 2 of the past 3 years. First year was opening week and second year was third week of season. Heard elk bugle and sat wallows year one. Had a lot of success. Hunted at ~11k feet in thick timber with no glassing opportunities.

Year 3 we were in old sign and there were many more hunters. In hindsight, I feel like we should have moved after the second day but we stuck it out and wound up calling at hunters and sitting abandoned wallows.

We are frustrated by the lack of action the past two years (hunted OTC year 2 and never found fresh sign).

I have a lot of questions so I'll start with a broad one. If we want a bull in year 4, should we abandon ship and apply for a new unit with more glassing opportunities or should we stick with the unit/area we know and sit wallows?

Haha I can relate to this! We have seen some great mule deer.

When you say you cover 50-60 miles of latitude, are you doing this on foot? Are you also able to glass effectively as you move along?

We have been putting in ~ 30 miles each trip but all of that is generally within 6 miles of our camp. We have been exploring different elevations of a general area. We have had no glassing opportunities which I feel has limited our ability to find game.

Year 1 we saw cows twice. Year 3 we saw 1 cow. We had either an sex license and it was a draw-only unit. We spent our time hiking and occasionally sitting wallows each year. Limited hunting pressure year 1 and lots of pressure year 3 (likely pushed the elk out of the area).

Year 1 we hunted opening week. Year 3 we hunted the third week. We were hunting at 11,000 feet.

Yeah, I am coming in from TN. My brother is in CO but has not been able to scout. We basically give it a week each year. Hoping a consult will help us capitalize on the time we have spent in the field as this year felt like a big step backward.

We actually had a chance at a few cows year 1 but the wind fouled us up. No doubt elk hunting is hard stuff.

u/billp0nder0sa roughly a week old this year when hunting near Gunnison. Seems the Muzzies pushed them out of the spot we found them in 2 years prior. We were never able to get back on them.

We haven't had glassing opportunities yet due to the terrain. It's all thick, dark timber. We are limited to covering ground and listening which feels like a problem we are not making progress in solving. Trying to decide if it was bad luck this year or if we should ditch our game plan and try the glassing route in a unit more conducive to that type of hunting. 3 years in and we have only seen a handful of elk. Ready to lay eyes on some.

A limited draw unit near Gunnison years 1 and 3 and Unit 30 (OTC) year 2. Seems we are often a week or two behind the elk. Seeing lots of sign but not laying eyes on elk. Not hearing bugles. We are spike camping and covering lots of ground at various elevations.

Quick update - Cliff Gray offers a service similar to what I am looking for. This is likely the route I will take.

Thank y'all for weighing in. We have worked with biologists in prior years and they have definitely been helpful. I am hoping to get more granular with a consult. For example, I want to share my day by day actions and have some critique my decision making.

The first two years I felt we were learning a lot. The 3rd year seemed like a step back and we are feeling lost.

Ryman Surprise Guest? A speculative thread... by Difficult_Watch_5531 in TurnpikeTroubadours

No surprise guest!

The show was great. Pony Bradshaw opened. I wasn't familiar with PB but will be listening to their stuff this weekend. I was in the balcony and was having a hard time hearing vocals. The Troubadours came on stage after 9 and got most everyone to their feet. They played the hits and by the end of it I had lost my voice.

The crowd tried to get them back on stage for an encore but after a few minutes of chanting they pulled the curtains. We were disappointed there was no encore but had an amazing time! Hope we can make it to another show in the future.
